North Korean school uploads video of protest to YouTube

Essentially after the war, Koreans could choose which country to affiliate themselves with. A vast majority have become Japanese citizens or South Korean citizens, but a few have held on to their “Chosen” identity, and affiliated themselves and their children with North Korea.

While I understand peoples’ frustration with these kinds of schools, the group harassing them are nothing but a group of thugs holding a noisy protest during school hours. The children aren’t the problem here. These are the same guys screaming at Korean tourists on the north islands to go home, or telling whites to get out of Japan on Halloween.

Don’t buy into their BS and don’t be sympathetic with them.

Funny – Mindan-run schools didn’t seem to have any problem attaining those standards. As for International schools, the crux of the “issue” seems to be that the Japanese Education Ministry has this ridiculous requirement that courses be conducted in Japanese, using Ministry-approved Japanese-language texts. I mean really – what the hell are they be thinking? The Japanese Education Ministry insisting that schools in Japan use Japanese texts and teach in Japanese? Sheesh…

Would that the US Department of Education and local school boards had such rigid “requirements”.

Whether the standards are attainable or unattainable (and they are obviously attainable) is really beside the point. Chosen Soren has publicly stated it will not seek Education Ministry certification that it has met the standards and thus become accredited schools. The North Koreans view compliance with Japanese standards as an attempt to “assimilate” them, make them Japanese, destroy their “Korean-ness” and deny them their culture.

And then complain because they can’t get into state-run universities in Japan as they only have a GED, not a real high-school diploma. Gotta wonder – if they are so desperate to not turn Japanese, why are they living in Japan, for generations, and why would they even want to go to a Japanese state-run university? No open seats at Kim Il-Sung University?

I wonder too. Why does Japan allow this? I suspect something to do with cashflows from pachinko business.

If, just for the sake of discussion, I was born, raised and educated in Japan…

To parents born, raised and educated in Japan…

And their parents were born, educated and raised in Japan…

And their parents (increasingly likely nowadays) were born, raised and educated in Japan…

I would be Japanese. Culturally so by birth, and if I was not legally so by birth I would make every effort to become so upon becoming an adult and thus become a normal, functioning, contributing citizen of my country and society.

But that’s just me.

Are you sure Japanese government banned all the schools to displays images of Kim Il Sung?

I don’t think it is a good idea to make Korean students worship Kill Il Sung by displaying the image at schools, but banning it at private schools by J government is another story.
Isn’t it the case that some schools pull down the image voluntarily from the classrooms but some other schools are still displaying it?

I am asking this because misleading information will just tense up the relations between Japanese and non-Japanese and there are some blogs on Japanese side as well as non-Japanese side that are intentionally spreading misleading information.

That is what I mean when I said “it is good enough for the hard learners to be able to read English.”

The high school students who have mastered the basics of English taught at school can go on higher stages if they are put in the environment where they have to, one way or another, read English books. And to enter a graduate school, reading skill is essential.
And that’s the way Japanese researchers and scholars have acquired knowledge of the western science, philosophy, and literature. And nowadays it it no uncommon to find Japanese businesspersons reading English newspaper on the trains.

Right.
But when people go to live in a foreign country, they’ll usually check the prejudice and preconception about the country and its people by discussing with the local people in the local language and try to understand the society by reading the local newspapers, by understanding social and historical conditions, by checking the laws on the books.

My impression is that some expats living in Japan are just lazy, not trying to read Japanese articles, not trying to discuss with the local people.
They hold on to the outdated prejudice , leading absurd conclusions based on unchecked facts, getting angry at the fictional host country they created.
(I’m not saying there are no Japanese abroad like that.)
