A lot of people here are very sensitive about gaijin being portrayed as over-the-top weirdo nerds who are desperate for Japanese totty and can barely speak the language, so when someone who can barely speak the language goes on TV deliberately being an over-the-top weirdo nerd acting desperate for a Japanese girl, thereby confirming many of the Japanese stereotypes about gaijin, they get upset. As per the comment by somegirl below, I just noticed.

If you are contemplating a career in journalism, you really should dig deeper into things and not just pull stunts.

Also, when you interact with the public or critics, to react as you are here is unprofessional, and the internet is a bad choice of venue to react like this.

I checked out your blog and it has some rather freshmen representations of Japan (wow, unpaid overtime and drinking after work, you say!).

I’ve never been to Japan, don’t know that much about, really, but a little research and help from the more seasoned men and women who have lived there would probably help you to pursue things that are less ‘flash’ and more substance.

And treating people badly is something that anyone should regret. I don’t think people should insult you for no reason, but there is a lot of legitimate criticism here–a consequence of putting yourself out there.

Right now all I see you doing is trying to verify American stereotypes of Japanese while reinforcing Japanese stereotypes of Americans in Japan! It’s painful to see.

Showing by example that we are normal people, good neighbors and not any different from people anywhere else. Carrying on normal lives, sitting on neighborhood committees, being friendly and courteous to the folks next door, adapting and integrating into the society of our home.

Aside from that, not doing much really…

Most people who know what’s really important in life wouldn’t want to win on any of those points you seem think are important or admirable. Nor would they be interested in ‘competing’ with him.

I guess there are a lot of jerks on TV, so if he wants a career in that industry maybe the way he acts is okay, but I don’t understand why anyone would want to be that way.

Maybe the taunts you and Jimmy dish out do make other people look bad to some people, but mostly they say more about you.

Japanese women are like any other people in the world, and deserve the same respect you would give any other man or woman.

I probably don’t have that good an ear for Japanese and even I noticed he was using entirely different syllables than what he should have for some words. Not that it’s a huge issue–I’m sure some honest effort will resolve that.

I’m dismayed by his attitude toward people here. I’m all for sticking up for oneself, but the way he does it doesn’t say anything positive about him. It almost seems to me that he doesn’t have a problem with what some people are doing here, he’s just thinks he should be the one dishing it out instead of taking it.

I guess he just needs to brush up on public relations for the sake of his career. Maybe he can make it acting like he does, but I think things could be easier for him.
