Ichihashi eats some food

November 25th, 2009 by James

Ichihashi Bento

Tatsuya Ichihashi has been refusing to talk or eat since he was arrested on November 10th. Yesterday marked the first time he actually ate food, but police aren’t certain that he will continue eating, so they have moved him to a different facility:

Police officials said that Ichihashi, who had been refusing to eat since he was arrested on Nov. 10, ate a boxed lunch on Tuesday at Gyotoku Police Station in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, for the first time in the past 14 days.

As Ichihashi had abstained from food for nearly two weeks, only drinking tea and receiving nutrient injections, the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office decided to transfer him to the detention facility at Chiba Prison in Wakaba Ward in order to observe Ichihashi’s health condition at a center with better medical facilities.

The TV news reports have said that police tried various types of food, finally succeeding with a terayaki pork bento.

tabloid lindsay

If you’ve been keeping up with the tabloid news ads that appear on JR trains, you might have noticed a Shukan Post headline alleging that police have a video that shows Lindsay and Ichihashi kissing. According to an Cyzo article, the information comes from a person who claims to have helped the police investigation. Police supposedly showed this person a video taken by an elevator surveillance camera. In it, Ichihashi and Lindsay embrace and start making out. The source claims there that there were no visible signs of resistance or displeasure from Lindsay.

And that makes it ok to illegally dispose of a corpse? I don’t think so.

well, maybe it was accidental, maybe they were doing some kinky sex and she died from it. . .he freaked and didn’t know what to do. really am curious to his side of the story. personally, as a women and an American, I do not feel sorry for this girl, yeah, death is bad but she did not use common sense . . who goes to a guys place alone in any country, including one’S own country, without looking for trouble. . .or causing it.

Their relationship (if any) is irrelevant. The charge he is held on is “abandoning a body”. There seems to be really strong evidence to support this charge so it’s likely they could convict him on this charge.

Lots of girls went to my place alone (with me) and I didn’t beat the shit out of/kill/mutilate/dispose of any of them. In fact I would say it is a very common scenario for girls to go to a guys place and vice versa. At least in the western world.

You’ve never beat the shit of them OR killed them? Man, you’re not a good host at all. If you’re dating a girl, you’re suppose to at least beat the shit out of her by the 3rd date, or its not going anywhere.

If we were talking about Lucie Blackman, you might have a point. But we’re not. And I have never heard of any kind of mutually consensual “kinky sex” that involves brutally beating someone about the head and hacking off all their hair. It is pretty doubtful Lindsay’s death was an accidental result of sex, considering the condition her body was reported to have been in.

As a British woman, I find that statement rather offensive. She had been teaching this man English (and maybe had relations with him at one time), so we can assume that she saw him often. Logically, she must have trusted him in some way.

Anyway, who is to say he didn’t put pressure on her to go to his house?

Whether you believe either of these comments is irrelevant. It is inappropriate and insensitive to say that you ‘do not feel sorry for this girl, yeah, death is bad but she did not use common sense’ – as this does not justify anything.

You can tell from their front page that Cyzo is a highly reputable news organisation. We can definitely rely on that third hand report of a mystery survelliance video.

Perhaps the suspect will starve himself to death before trial. Do Japanese police have the legal authority to force feed a suspect?

Exactly. All White Gaijins look the same on tape, all drunk and there to terrorize the Japanese people LOL

No but seriously – what proof do they have that it is her and him on that elevator video?

Not only that, I highly doubt that she would make out with a dude as ugly as he was – unless, of course, once again, she was pissed up on one too many Sapporos and sake.

Man, she must’ve been desperate to make out with that dude.

The Cyzo article continues as

It looked as if they just started seeing each other. If it was true, the aspect of this [murder] case might be very different. Why did he murder such a beloved woman? What kind of a quarrel was there between them? Where does his strong will to escape come from, even with plastic surgery?

It also indicates that the police investigator asked the man who was shown the video to keep it secret.

I was wondering what the intent of the last paragraph was about. Are they saying that because they were making out it was okay that he killed her or that we just come up with it and decided to use it now because we needed to fill up the page. We all know how good magazines are about not being bias about their news. Gotta love’em.

Detail makes all the difference.
Crime and maximum penalty
Murder (if he intended to kill her), death penalty
Robbery Murder (if he intended to rob of her), death penalty
Rape resulting in death (if he did not intend to kill her), life in prison
Injury causing death (if he did not intend to kill her), 20 years in prison
Causing Death through Gross Negligence, 5 years in prison
Causing Death through Negligence, 500,000 yen fine

In the unlikely event that she killed herself, his only charge is Abandonment of Corps with maximum penalty of 3 years in prison.

I’m not sure if you are seriously wondering about the intention of the last paragraph of partial excerpt from a less-credible tabloid news source.

The arrest warrant against Ichihashi was issued only for the crime of abandoning a dead body, I think. It was the only and the most serious crime that the police can ask the court to issue an arrest warrant against him at that point. The police still probably needs to investigate on an additional but far more important crime, the crime of murder, as Stereo suggested. You were informed just a small part of the fact from an investigation process which has not yet been proven to be correct.

I think he was charged with the abandoning a corpse crime because there were plenty of witnesses and it could be easily proven. So I think they chose this crime as a basis to hold him while they decide the extend of the other charges. I’m guessing they may have hoped for a confession after he was arrested so they could have made the charges fit whatever he confessed to. I’m guessing that any investigating in relation to murder has already been done, other than talking to the suspect.
I think they are handling the case very carefully since they botched it so horribly in the beginning. I’m kind of curious why they didn’t charge him with something like resisting arrest right away as well since that was easy to prove.
Like Stereo said the details can make a difference. I hope they take into consideration his years of evading police as well as the brutality and planning involved in the current charge against him when considering the possibility of his guilt.

I don’t know if continuing on this tabloid source material is meaningful though…

To clarify the intention of Cyzo’s article (I haven’t read Shukan Post’s one and have no intention to do so), the writer does not claim that Ichihashi’s (suspected) murder was OK at all. He seems to imply that the case might be a tragic story of a loving couple. Not the matter of justification but of sympathy, I think.
