Lucky couple have samurai wedding ceremony at Japanese castle

This week’s “Nanikore Chin Hyakkei” had a segment about a samurai wedding at Matsue Castle:

The wedding was modeled after the kind of celebration that might occur if the groom had been a feudal lord. Their friends and family were dressed in samurai attire, taking on the role of the lord’s retainers.

The couple got to have this unique wedding because they had submitted the prize-winning entry to a contest celebrating the 400th anniversary of the castle. A local tourism NPO helped set everything up, so the ceremony only cost 30,000 yen ($337).

I seem to recall that Nijo Castle in Kyoto was also opening their gates to weddings. This was a few months ago though so I have no idea if they are still working it.

Isn’t it ironic, winning a once-in-a lifetime ceremony at Matsue Castle on it’s 400th anniversary, getting dressed up in elaborate period costume and then raaaaaiiin on your wedding day…

I just noticed something. The title of this show is mistranslated, isn’t it: Nani kore chin hyakkei? There’s a huge difference between ha and hya here. The hya can be heard ever so subtle in the pronounciation, but it’s there. Also the kanji for onehundred, hyaku is in the title. Am I wrong about this? Maybe hya is romanized to ha, but it leads to a lot of confusion, atleast in my book.

Probably a typo. Hakkei is “Eight Scenes.”
