Examining Tatsuya Ichihashi’s new face

Two clips of Japanese news shows discussing suspected murderer Tatsuya Ichihashi’s post-plastic surgery face photo:

Clip #1: Analysis of Ichihashi’s plastic surgery

A plastic surgeon examines the photo of Ichihashi’s new face and concludes that the criminal was getting surgery to make his face look more nondescript. Usually people who get work done on their faces want sharper features, but Ichihashi was actively trying to blend away his most distinct facial features.

The changes could have been done as a series of one-day operations, none of which would have required an overnight stay at the hospital. The operations cost at least 500,000 yen.

Clip #2: Simulated “after” shots of Ichihashi’s plastic surgery

This clip aired the day the news broke about Ichihashi having had some cosmetic surgery. As the police had not yet seen fit to release photos of his new appearance, Fuji TV used photoshop to make a wild guess.

A few details from ITN:

Detectives say Tatsuya Ichihashi, who has been on the run for almost three years, may now have a thicker jaw, lower eyebrows and a protruding bottom lip.

He is accused of killing 22-year-old English teacher before leaving her body in a bathtub full of sand at his flat in Tokyo.

It is thought Ichihashi, 30, paid for cheek implants and lip-thinning treatment in an operation a fortnight ago.

Ichihashi paid the hospital fees in cash. It is being reported that he told somebody at the hospital in Nagoya that he was living at a rented room in a love hotel. There are also reports that he may have been sleeping at internet cafes.

Since the story of Ichihashi’s surgery made the news, police have received many new reports of sightings.

One program yesterday morning had Ai Haruda as a panelist, going over the minutiae of the bodily transformation…I kind of really want to know what she had to say on the matter (seeing as how she’s a plastic surgery ‘participant’ as well).

How exactly did they come to the conclusion that this guy has had plastic surgery? I don’t understand how they think it MIGHT have happened. What, did some doctor do the surgery then have a change of heart and tell the police that he MIGHT have given a murderer plastic surgery? Does he have friends or family that dropped the clue? If so, why is it just that he MIGHT have gotten surgery? This just sounds like Japanese cops trying to cover their ineptness. Guys couldn’t even catch a damn monkey running around in a station.

according to news reports on the web,the surgery that he went to initially didn’t recognise him because he’s been in for surgery several times already and as you can see he hardly resembles the original wanted pictures at all. After the surgery they grew suspicious open reading case notes mentioning the removal of two moles matching the description of those put out by the police. They contacted the police, and the police attended when he was supposed to turn up for a follow up, but, yep, he didn’t turn up.

So yeah I think everyone’s being a bit too harsh in condemning the surgery he went to – sounds to me that they’re the heroes in this new development and deserve recognition for their quick thinking. big ups I say.

Well at least they now have a photo of his new “face” maybe they’ll be able to catch him now. Unless of course he goes for more surgeries and becomes totally something else again.

it looks like they’ve got his fingerprints from the dorm he lived in while working in osaka:

and his mother has denied funneling him any money, and publicly announced her hope for him to turn himself in:

About what the father said concerning DNA and fingerprints:
He is very wrong about that. With today’s technology it is indeed possible to alter one’s DNA. Of course the technology is not available to the public, but it can be done with the right equipment. Also scientists have already shown that they can fake DNA evidence.
It is also possible to erase/change the fingerprints. They aren’t as great for forensics anyway as the law system wants you to think. Studies have shown that it is not unlikely to receive a false positive when comparing fingerprints. There was an interesting discussion on slashdot about that a few weeks ago.
