Interesting concrete house in Japan
November 7th, 2009 by James

A TV program visits a home in Japan with concrete “horns” instead of a normal roof:
Neighboring houses would block sunlight, so the roof is horn-shaped with skylights on top to catch as much sunlight as possible. This creates a very bright interior without much need for other lighting during the daytime.

looks like giant molar tooth, the only problem is the ugliness of the unfinished bare concrete, put some ivy plants to cover that and it would improve it a lot.
I like the design quite a bit – it does look plenty bright inside.
it’s much sturdy than most Japanese houses but needs some paint
You’re either too young or too old to understand the beauty of naked concrete.
Anyways, it must be great to be rich like the couple in this clip.
what happens when it rains? LOL
I’d paint it, if it were mine.
many concrete mixtures cant be painted because of the structural integrity and internal chemistry inside of the walls. (or it needs special collors)
–what happens when it rains? LOL–
look better on the geometry of this house. it will not be wet or hot for a long time. btw i must give my respect for the guy who planed this house. he used simple geometrical struckture to minimum of negatives of the concrete in a comfortable and very cheap and green way.
There isn’t much about concrete that could be described as ‘green’. It’s extremely energy intensive to produce.
sorry but you got it wrong. “green” was no about concrete itself but about they way how it was used to get this house into comfortable home.
they still sleep in separate beds lol
At first the completely open concept was a little bit of a turn off, then I noticed the separate beds, yikes.
I guess it’s normal for Japanese couples. That would also explain the low child birth rate.
I really like the concept, but I think there could be some adjustments to the general shape to make it more interesting and appealing. For me there are a few to many strong edges. But I’d be ok with living there. Currently my apartment consist of one large room, one entrance hall, a bathroom (by the way, where is their bathroom???) and a kitchen corner in the big room, so I’m accustomed to an open living concept.
I would kill myself on those stairs. I understand the need for the design, but still!
