In Japan, IIRC, nobody officially "dies" until a doctor says so. Thus all the reports of people falling 15 stories, or getting cut in half by a train, and then being brought to a hospital and only THEN "dying". Can't really explain the "four hours later" part or any other details, but I do know that the right kind of damage to your femoral artery can kill you very quickly.
