Halloween train in Japan

Yesterday, the Yomiuri Shimbun ran a story about a Halloween Party held on a train in Fukui. Unlike the infamous Yamanote Halloween Party, this party was organized with the cooperation of the rail company and the local community. The Fukui International Club rented out train cars and installed a music system and disco balls so people could dance on the train. About 200 people participated.
There were no reports of delayed trains or vandalism. The local police did not have to place dozens of officers at every station to maintain order. The party did not provoke rage from 2-channel or nationalist groups.
Here are a few videos of previous Fukui Halloween train parties:

Exactlyl Sat An.
A textbook case of how to do things right.
As pointed out in other Japan Probe article, the “other” Halloween train’s participants were acting in ways which antagonized the local population. As article also stated, many were overtly expressing that it was their way of getting back at Japanese people (whatever that means).
Yet, the anti Japan crowd focuses solely on the demonstrators and right wingnuts, instead of looking at the overall picture and the actions/attitudes which provoked such animosity in the first place.
Working with the local population and setting up an activity that anyone can enjoy and have fun with.
Wow, what a revolutionary concept.

YES,this is japanese style.
they are very different from nuisance aliens , loser gaijin of yamanote.
There is a time and a place for everything.
The party’s over.
From now on, we japanese will not forgive these gaijin crimes whatever the circumstance.

Arerae, do you speak for ALL Japanese? Didn’t think so.
I can tell English is not your first language so I’ll give you a free tip. In English, don’t use the expression “we Japanese”. It’s not the same as “我々日本人”. It just makes you look like a douche.
I think the Yamanote train idiots are just that, idiots, but when you make silly comments like “gaijin crimes”, you look even more reactionary and unintelligent.

Good for them! Fukui’s a great, laid-back place; although they don’t have many foreign residents, it’s good to see that they can work hand-in-hand with local Japanese residents to have a fun, safe time.

Wow..I live in Fukui and didn’t know about this. Yeah the gaijin population, especially the ones that celebrate Halloween, are very small and the Japanese here are more welcoming to foreigners than than Japanese from bigger cities it seems. It may be the inaka, but I love it. It actually freaks me out when I go to a bigger city and see a lot of Gaijin!

If Japanese people had the party once that you have been taking place in Yamanote line. the people would be arrested immediately by police and kicked into jail. that’s the point of matter.
You can do everything having fun even smoking ganja on the streets. ( you’ll see smoking ganja man on Roppongi area..)
but Japanese people can’t do anything such like shameful party at the public space.
most foreigner has been treated well than Japanese people by the police and the gov. especially US person.
Anytime you can have a silly party at home.
there is no need to be in the train.

Hilarious,
There were no riots or police, James, because you didn’t run any articles in time demonizing their activies to whip up your nutty friends on 2ch into a frenzy. It still strikes me as hilarious how you try to act blameless for the hysteria that transpired. That didn’t stop you from spreading rumors and hearsay about a party that you’ve never even attended. Man, how it must aggravate you to know that your fellow gaijin and japanese are having some fun without your official seal of approval. You seem obsessed with shutting down such a small, brief festive get-together on a single train car that’s been celebrated for years. So much so that you deliberately lied about the 2008 get together being a no-show until samuraidave set the record straight and made you look like an imbecile.
In short, try focusing on real happenings and stop getting your panties in a twist every time this generation of youth challenge your small minded ideas of what society should be and act like. Oh, and feel free to grow up and live a little.

My posts are written in English, a language 99% of 2-channelers cannot read. In past years, they attacked this website because they assumed I was a supporter of the party.
This party was killed by the rise of YouTube. Videos uploaded by party participants contained all the evidence 2-channelers needed to be driven into a rage. Even the selectively edited videos uploaded one outspoken worshiper of the party were outrageous to them [the user who filmed those videos is banned from this site for excessive personal blog link spamming].
2-channel was way ahead of me this year. I actually found that Gaijinpot announcement via one of their threads.
I saw that video. He spent a lot of time filming the same tiny group people from many different angles.
It set the record straight about how the 2008 “party” failed miserably to reach anything close to the scale of the 2007 or 2006 events.
Feel free to grow up and learn how to hold a party without being a douche. I posted this news story as an example, but apparently you’re blind to the appropriateness of renting a private train car for a train party.
Haha, yes, I went to this event! I was one of the Santas there (not the big one with a real beard in the picture). It was pretty funny when the train pulled up alongside another or behind some houses where you could see the people inside, because they would stare in utter disbelief at the flashing, thumping monstrosity barelling down the tracks. Still, everything was safe and extremely fun. The party was open to all ages, so there were even people from elementary school there. Afterward, there was a party at a club called `LITE` for more dancing and drinks. If anyone says there`s nothing to do in Fukui, it`s simply not true. We`ve got an awesome population who knows how to have fun.

Halloween is not even scary here! Japan you seriously need foreigners, hope Japan realizes that someday and not be so xenophobic and racist!
Haunted houses are missing here too
Pumpkins missing too!
Increase the frickin birthrate here for cry sakes, too few children that’s just very sad!
Dallas, Texas arboretum with many pumpkins!
Nice Halloween fall theme setup!

Oh my, what a grab-bag of dumb and benign statements mixed together. It’s almost like … like a bag full of Trick-or-treat candy!
I like your reasoning that Japan’s version of Halloween being cute and fun instead of scary is because Japan is xenophobic and racist and has a low birthrate.
Certainly didn’t see that one coming.
It’s always amusing when people expect without question that their own traditions will be or should be accepted and grafted onto a foreign society that has no cultural basis or reason for paticipating in it.
I suppose it’s this kind of optimism that promotes globalization and the intermixing of cultures, but I can’t help but feel it looks pretty self-centered when I see it in action. No offense.

What is so dumb about stating the facts and having your own opinion?
Its a free country and can say what I want brother!
Glad its possible to enjoy Halloween in Japan, and sure it may be different…it’ll get better, makasete kudasai!
Still think Japan’s cool, even though it has its many screw ups that need fixing! For example its that in your face racism, definite xenophobia, and low birth rate are few of the major ills facing Japan!
And their way of globalization is taking the best from the world and making it into their own!
And!
How many places can you find a ferris wheel at a rest stop off the highway,
toilets with warm seats, getting beer from a vending machine, crosswalks even elevators that make sounds to alert you, and temperature controllable bathtubs?
That’s some of the reasons why Japan is just cool, period!
Japan is a universe of fusion, simple as that.
Aint nothing wrong with globalization.
America is also a cool country and glad people here actually appreciate that!

Racism? Nationalism? Xenophobia? 2-channelers?
No, no. Just take the proper procedure and everything will be OK.
Why cannot Yamanote Gaijins understand such a simple thing?
Don’t feel, Think! Make your brain work a little better for now.
It’s the Japanese who finally decide how to enjoy Halloween in Japan.
You know even Christmas in Japan is so unique in the world.
Eating strawberry shortcakes and KFC. Christmas cards are not necessary at all, but send Nengajo instead. For lovers, Christmas Eve is nothing but an occasion to make love. For those who don’t have lovers yet, the day means the time limit to find one. Christmas trees suddenly disappear as soon as 25th is over, and Kadomatsu takes its place all around.
Who would say “Oh, it’s not Christmas!” and try to reform it?
Of course you can also have a nice traditional Christmas at church if you hope, though.

k,
you are not seriously inviting that sort of question NOW, are you?
The whole point of the Yamanote chaos is that the foreign elements are purposefully challenging the local JR security and police and law to see if the Japanese would do something about such a Terrorist-type activity of intentional trouble-causing and public disruption.
On a side note, people have been partying on “trains” ever since trains were invented – remember? It used to be romantic and all that to be able to travel in style on a train on a slow journey to somewhere dreamy and have a good time while doing it. This new interpretation is, in a way, an extension and re-stylization of that. Doing it legally, on a permitted, organized train is fine. It’s the illegal, ignorant, arrogant, purposeful disturbance by those Yamanote Yahoos that is creating this perception problem.

its internatonal student thing. back in 90′ens international students enjoyed it because of not having money (and having fear) for yakuza clubs and bad customs for “no get together” rules at that time in area around the univercity. so they followed this idea:

Apparently, Japanese are the only race/ethnicity on the planet earth that are simply not allowed to show any ounce of anger, disgust, or disapproval over anything.
Drunken foreigners harrass old Japanese ladies? Foreigners act and think anyway they want in another country like Japan, attributing it to western ‘free spirit?’
No big deal. Only a “racist” or “xenophobic” Japanese would dare express anger or disapproval at that.
Ridiculous double standards as always.
