The Wikipedia entry of エゾシカ (Cervus nippon yesoensis) tells

…雄は体長90～190cm・体重50～130kg、雌は体長90～150cm・体重25～80kgに達する。 ... the typical size of deer reaches body length 90-190cm and weight 50-130kg for males and 90-150cm, 25-80kg for females.

So, a 300cm long male deer can amount to about 200kg. Furthermore, they are in a breeding season just now. The Wikipedia entry briefly describes the history of protection and control of deer and the current situation. People in Hokkaido seem to be spending a difficult time of population control nowadays.

Any wild animal is to be handles with caution, it isn’t for nothing that they are called willed. They live a tough life and is unexpectedly aggressive and full of stamina.

I was going to make a remark about how everyone was overreacting for just a few deers, but a an agitated 3 meter long wild animal equipped with sharp hooves, 50 cm horns and a leap that defeats any normal fence … ok, I can see why everyone is concerned and keeping their distance.
