Otaku Rooms

October 29th, 2009 by James

American-Otaku

An NTV “Zoom In” news report about the popularity of anime in the United States visits the home of an American otaku to see his treasures:

It’s John Patterson, a 42-year-old employee of Media Blasters. Patterson has a collection of some 8,000 items, totaling close to 50 million yen in value.

Similarly impressive otaku rooms can be found in the Otacool database on Figure.fm (which has been released as a bilingual book).

The rest of the news report, showing some fans at the NY Anime Festival:

The clip shows Americans learning manga drawing techniques, and representative from Del Rey Manga mentions how many new American comic books are heavily influenced by Japanese anime and manga. They also interview a few fans and find out about how they find the themes of friendship and loyalty present in anime stories to be very appealing. A few cosplayers also say they want to live in Japan.

Are you so lacking in self esteem that you have to attack this person’s sexuality? Your pointless comment demonstrates your obvious jealousy. Leave comedy to the professionals… (6_6)

I second the 42 year old virgin comment, but the guy wasn’t a tool or anything and had some pretty cool/valuable stuff, I give him an A for representing, without looking like a tool.

As for the 1 piece guy, he was talking out of his ass, “oh yea I’m thinking of buying a house in Japan, somewhere in Kyoto or Hokkaido”, ookkkayy buddy.

He did a fair job repping the American set of Anime fans. Also, like a lot of other events with enthusiasts, you’d be surprised at what kind of people are deep into this stuff. For one such shock to the system, look up Alodia Gosiengfiao(also up there in that Otacool link)

Therefore, the internet will doom us all.

And what exactly have you contributed to the world to make your existance meaningful?? At least he’s on Japan TV showing that anime fans are likeable – not losers and perverts.

I assume they made the audience sniff a vial filled with the scent of sweaty balls, sperm, and Big Macs so they’d get the full “otaku’s room” experience?

If those are the familiar odors in your room, may I suggest buying some Fabreeze – not all anime fans are live at home slobs!

To be perfectly honest, the guy in the first video managed to surprise me somewhat.

He came off as obsessed without being particularly creepy. I think it is the general assumption I now run on that being a self-proclaimed “anime otaku” almost always implies a certain… sexual component to the obsession. So, his innocence, in this regard, makes his fanaticism… almost acceptable.
