A tour of Haneda Airport

October 27th, 2009 by James

haneda kids

The foreign stars of Asahi TV’s regular sightseeing news segment get a behind-the-scenes look at Haneda Airport:

They are shown the following:

  • the airport’s Shinto shrine
  • a daycare center for the children of airport staff (with a very cool view)
  • the room in which airport employees answer phone calls and make airport-wide announcements (it’s not a machine voice)
  • Haneda’s new international terminal (scheduled to be completed next year)
  • a new runway (also scheduled to be completed next year)

The voice of the one in the purple vest makes me want to dig my eardrums out with the nearest metal implement.

May airports have chapels. I wonder how high will be takeoff and landing fees for such an expensive airport. Can they stay competitive ?

If there’s one thing more annoying than Japanese tarentos gasping in shock and surprise at the smallest thing (I recently heard へぇぇぇぇぇぇ~ when someone mentioned bread was made from wheat), it’s gaijin tarentos squeaking along like the natives.

Oh, and somebody ought to try this at Haneda:

Looks like a half, probably born and bred in Japan.

Although personally I’d prefer someone fluent in Japanese to someone who is barely literate in English.

Maybe, she is Sahel Rosa? According to Wikipedia, she is a Japanese citizen of Persian descent who was born in Iran and emigrated to Japan at the age of 8. She is quadrilingual and got a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Tokai University. A war orphan of the Iran-Iraq War.

I really don’t understand why you criticize her for her good command of Japanese.
I for one think it’s really great to see foreigners on TV doing the show from time to time. It breaks a bit this exaggerated xenophobic image which sticks to the Japanese people so badly. And it also shows that Foreigners can master Japanese.
