Meggings: leggings for men
October 22nd, 2009 by James

Apparently leggings for men (“meggings”) are this year’s hit fashion item for Japanese men in their 20’s and 30’s:
The leggings-wearing men who are interviewed say they like meggings, but most women don’t seem to find their choice of clothing to be very manly. Of the 100 women interviewed, only 62 did not think men look cool when they wear leggings.

There’s no such thing as being gay in Japan, haven’t you ever read Saikaku?

Nothing wrong wit it –
it’s normal LATINO GANG fashion, here in L.A. They all wear those long socks up to the knees with the funky baggy long shorts.

why wear them with shorts? just wear long pants. now when its so cold regular pants aren’t enough, then you can wear those. otherwise pointless imo.

It never gets cold enough to wear double layered pants in Tokyo. I’ve been here 3 years and never had to wear my winter coat once.

I seem to remember Beckham wearing these years ago and if he can’t make them catch on…
If you just want the warmth then long johns under trousers have been around for centuries.

” this year’s hit fashion item for Japanese men in their 20’s and 30’s”
-FAIL!
It’s for young Japanese guys in their 20s up until around 40 year old dudes. so says man in suit

“in their 20s up until around 40 year old dude”
Yeah, and? He’s giving a だいたい figure for the maximum age of men who buy it. Every other news report about it on TV has stressed that this is a trend for young men.
You’ve 40s everywhere very sad.

lol DOUBLE FAIL
ぐらい is relating to the maximum age, 大体 in this case means more or less means “generally” or “mostly” as in- “generally/mostly(daitai) young men from their 20s up to around(gurai) 40″
so the daitai is more or less stressing that this where most of the consumers fall, not the maximum.
BOOM HEAD SHOT.

“You just made a lot people in their 40s very sad” is what I was trying to say.

Yeah, if you want to stay warm, just slip said leggings your pants. This is better than the man-skirt and leggings combo though.

Asahi Shinbun has an article on “Leggings for Men” too, but it also mentions on the aspect of thermals in winter.
『「レギンス男子」増殖中 ももひきとは違う防寒』 2009年10月12日
“Leggings boys” Increasing – Another Way of Protection Against the Cold Than Momohiki, 12 Oct. 2009
According the above article:
Momohiki (Google image search result for “モモヒキ”) is a (traditional) thermal wear for men, usually worn by middle-aged and elderly men.

Not only “Leggings for men” but also “Skirt for men” and “Hi heels for men”. It is highly suspicious that they are really a trend in men’s fashion.
A J-Cast News article on “Skirt Boys” (in Japanese):
http://www.j-cast.com/2009/08/11047258.html
J-Cast News reported that there was increasing number of men wearing a skirt in the areas like Harajuku and Aoyama (not Scotland) on 5 Aug. 2009. The above article is a follow up of it. A poll result in this article shows that 89% of voters don’t consider it fashionable.

The first guy the interview sure does look “alternative”… and so does the second guy… lol
“only 62″ – that’s wrong, when you read it after the previous sentence.

They don’t really look like women’s leggings, they are looser like tight pajama pants or something. And the second guy was wearing it in a way that, if I hadn’t known, I would just think it was a second pair of pants or socks. Hmm, it doesn’t bother me either way it’s just clothing. And what makes some fashion “gay” who decides that?

I wonder what’s next, stoles and muffs for men? Could call them moles and meffs perhaps?

How those guys coordinate the leggings is just a causal, layered male hipster wear that doesn’t inform anything about your sexual preference at all., it just reminds me of a hipster take on basketball uniform (where guys wear tights underneath the loose short pants).
Funny all these insecure little men crying ‘gay’, are they the same clueless boring folks who still thinks skinny jeans = gay?

How can everyone be surprised by this. Meggings have been around for a lot longer than before it came to Japan. In Canada they re called long johns… of course in Japan.. they re just glorified designer long johns.. but still LONG JOHNS!!!
and to the 62% woman that thought it was uncool! they obviously haven`t lived in -40 degree celsius weather.

Wow, here I was wondering how those ladies in really short skirts and tights could survive the cold Fukuoka winter. Now I can find out myself (er…without the skirt of course!)
