I totally agree with you. I can’t stand this woman either. I am so glad she retired from TV (at least). Not only her advices on children but also on marriage where outrageous. She had that backward image that women belong in the house and even if they have a abusive husband they should stay with him. And unmarried women are the bottom. Then she went on a shopping spree in switzerland which was just decadent. And now this? I guess that Taki from her TV show pretended to convincingly that he had a crush on her.

I don’t think that the ppl on 2chan are being any worse than any other kind of ppl online. What they said about Serena was mean(to say the least) but…hey man, that’s what being on the internet is all about! Saying things you wouldn’t say to someones face.

Personally, I think these translated sections of 2chan are fascinating. After living in Japan for 3 years, this is definitely a side that most ppl don’t see. My kanji and slang are far too low level to even attempt it.

A better comparison would be Tani Ryoko “Yawara-chan”.
She’s really famous to the point of being iconic, her face still pops up in a lot of advertisements, and I do think she could be kind of cute in a homely way, but she’s also the butt of a running joke on 2ch regarding her appearance.

A common joke is to post a 1000px wide super close-up of her face in a thread devoted to posting hot women, for example.

You can assume that it’s not actually “a black woman vs. an elderly woman” issue but rather a muscular woman and an elderly woman. Both far from the ideal (or fantasy if you like) of femininity. I don’t know what James meant for this though.

In general the Japanese people are ignorant about black people:it has merits and demerits. Since they are ignorant, some people feel the fear for the unknown. On the other hand, other people are curious about black people. Still other people adore black people.
There is no denying as a super minority in Japan, a black person will face lots of troubles, but at the same time I think there are always people who will help you.
The troubles often stem from misunderstandings. Yes sometimes Japanese people misunderstand you. Other times, black people misunderstand the Japanese. Please study Japanese language and the way they communicate.
There are a lot of Japanese who want to talk with foreigners, learn about different cultures, discuss the problems you are facing on condition that they can talk with people who know how to communicate in Japanese.
(Incidentally, the sentiment that influence people here in Japan is not anger but sadness, i.m.o.. And smiles and ojiki often do miracles. I say this because there are a few Angry White people who are miserably failing in communication in Japan, only to provoke backlash, I think the Japanese will welcome and listen to people from different background , black or white, who listen to Japanese, understand Japanese cultural and historical conditions and try to integrate to the society, through dialogues in Japanese.)
Most Japanese learn about black people through Hollywood and such, in that sense, we might share the prejudice to some extent, but keep in mind prejudice and stereotypes are not universal; I think you can make a relatively fresh start and become an pioneer. Anyway whatever life you choose, good luck to you.
