They do use them, but not as much as, say, Americans.

Of course when I wanted to buy something at Yodobashi Camera with my credit card in September, it didn’t work. The display of the credit card reader just kept on telling me to wait a while and the cashier gave up on trying to get the card to work.
Stupid credit card!
