Super Typhoon

The day before Typhoon Melor hit Japan, FTV rolled out some computer generated footage of a super strong typhoon hitting Japan and flooding the streets of Nagoya:

The doomsday scenario shown in the animation was created based on the predictions of researchers who believe an ultra strong super typhoon may hit Japan in the next 50 or 60 years. Apparently the super typhoon will be far stronger than Typoon Vera, which hit Japan in 1959 and killed nearly 5,000 people.

I’ve always found the convention of giving people names typhoons and hurricanes to be rather funny.
It almost seems like the people naming them treat each one as being special occurrences whereas Japan gets so many each year they’ve long turned apathetic.

The list of names consists of entries from 17 East Asian nations and the United States who have territories directly affected by typhoons. The submitted names are arranged into five lists; and each list is cycled with each year. Unlike hurricanes, typhoons are not named after people. Instead, they generally refer to animals, flowers, astrological signs, and a few personal names.

OMG, Al Gore is in Japan?

I think the water flooding Nagoya Station would be kind of neat. I mean, have you seen the tiles around that place? It would take me YEARS to scrub them clean with my tooth brush. Once those waves settle down imagine how clean and sparkly that area will be!

It will also take care of the bums around there, too.

Japan is far enough north that it would be extremely unlikely that a typhoon could ever Honshu in time before it fell apart significantly. Certainly a Category 5 would be impossible, and a Category 4 extremely unlikely. Perhaps there could be a Category 3, but I’d doubt if Japanese construction couldn’t handle that.
