Sea Cucumber phone straps

October 7th, 2009 by James

namako strap

Aomori has turned dried sea cucumbers into a popular souvenir item:

The sea cucumbers (namako) are dried, coated with gold or silver paint, and then sold as 1000 yen phone straps. They are apparently so popular that producers are having trouble keeping up with the demand.

Perhaps people are using them to display their loyalty to Azumanga Daioh’s “Namaco Team!”

Those things are horrible looking. I remember the first time I tasted a sea cucumber I was about 8 years old. It made me vomit instantly. A few days ago I had the opportunity to try it again. I unintentionally ate a piece. I wasn’t sure what it was and didn’t really care for it. I found out afterwards that it was sea cucumber. So, for me it fails as a meal and now it fails as a phone accessory.
