Italians like tomato nabe

NTV’s “Zoom In” finds a panel of Japanese-speaking Italians and asks them what they think of tomato nabe, a type of dish that has become popular lately:

They say that no such dish exists in Italy, and that it tastes great.

We are then shown two recipes for creating tomato nabe. One involves diced tomatoes, while another uses tomato juice.

You are right! That tomatoes have something to do with Italy I never thought.

Tomatoes = Spain!!! They grow them a lot!!! Italy means bread = pasta, pica, macaroni etc.

You never got the association of tomatoes with Italy? Really? Only a giant chunk of Italian cuisine has to do with tomatoes.

… anyway I’m Italian, I’ve tried the tomato nabe and honestly I didn’t like it at all.. Too sweet for my taste. ( Tan-tan nabe is the best one IMO)..

Yes tomato is originally from South America as are potatoes,chilies,corn and chocolate. It makes you wonder what Europeans ate before Christopher Colombus discovered the new world. Why shouldn’t Japanese also import it into their cuisine. They are also growing olives here so olive oil will also become part of their diet.
