New blood donation facility in Akihabara

A new blood donation facility called Akiba:F has opened in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, with otaku-friendly free wifi, figure display cases, shelves of manga, and video screens that will show movies:

Note: Some blood donation centers in Japan reject donations from people who have lived in certain “high risk” countries. If you want to give blood, check with donation center staff about such restrictions before you waste time filling out forms.

Since they have to check EVERY donation, what difference does it make where that persons been?

They are not checking the blood for prions.

This limitations emerged through the “mad cow craze”, and included all Europe and North America. (Despite many countries didn’t have BSE, not to mention “high risk” Japanese blood (a country where theree is reported BSE disease.

So if you have lived in any of these countries for more than five years, then they don’t need your blood.

(This was the case one or two years before. I haven’t checked afterwards.)

I figure this is better than the normal Akihabara blood-donating method of an otaku having a meltdown and swinging a knife at people…

I didn’t think you would be there long enough to play around with all their toys.

The process itself is generally not very long. However, they do encourage people to sit down and drink and eat a bit afterward before they head out in order to reduce the chance of fainting.

Japanese blood drives have either refused foreign blood donors as was done here in the 80s and 90s, or more commonly nowadays they take foreign/gaijin donations and throw it away.
Botton Line: Don’t bother.

Are you talking about the cases where pregnant women,people who stayed in specific places abroad during a specific period and such will be refused to donate blood?

not just if you are foreign,but you are usually asked not to give blood if you have a tattoo too.
I grew up in the UK,have tattoos and piercings so I am definitely ruled out.Taro I think is referring to the phobia against non-japanese donors that happened 15 or so yrs back when foreigners=AIDS was the way to think.
