Whale meat shabu shabu

A TV show visits a restaurant in Nagasaki, Japan’s #1 whale-consuming city:

They start out eating whale sashimi. They are then treated to a course of whale meat shabu shabu (the hotpot, not the drug). The sashimi and shabu shabu courses are 2,100 yen and 4,730 yen each.

That actually might be good. I’ve tried whale bacon, sashimi, and whale… mince meat, perhaps. Only the sashimi was any good, but it was a bit overwhelming. I think good, thin slices, and then cooked slightly (e.g., shabu shabu) would actually make the meat eatable.

Of course, you may contract mercury poisoning if you do it with any frequency…

Bacon?! No one said anything about bacon before. Now that’s something that might make me give whale another chance.
I tried whale sashimi and it wasn’t very good. Something I might eat again if I was starving, but never on purpose.
The shabu shabu sounds more palatable but honestly unless it’s tastier than beef or pork I can’t see myself asking for that one.

Whale bacon is overrated. So is whale, frankly. I’ve had whale sushi but it was so drenched in marinade it was hard to get any real flavour through.

And they really don’t care if these whales become some form of competition to HUMAN fishermen.

They’re just concerned about feeling better about themselves and thinking they are better than everyone else because they saved a really cute animal.

I was just joking. Sorry if it sounded offensive. But I still hesitate to put their precise address in romanized form here, although the name of the restaurant and their address are apparently shown in the video.

You can find their WEB page “鯨料理・割烹専門店とんぼ“, but it is entirely written in Japanese. It is located in Nagasaki city.

I assume these were the left overs from their Scientific studies and they strangely showed up in restaurants for sale to be eaten by celebritards who think it would be great with rice and “high grade”. Lying ass Japanese government cowards.

IWC demands, the whale meat used as research to not be wasted. Why do you Japan does research? It is not so that Australians can go on a whale safari but to be able to hunt whales in a sustainable manner without depleting the stocks.

Sounds like you have a good understanding of the research that’s being done. How much have you read? Considering the 1000-odd whales (that we know about) hunted each year for research purposes there must be a *stack* of material you’ve gone through. Do you have links? All high quality peer-reviewed scientific stuff I guess. Must be worth it though to avoid being called an ignorant pro-whaler.

They’ve published plenty of scientific studies, far more than the zero that prove Japan’s research whaling will cause the extinction of whale species.

I haven’t implied that whaling would cause the extinction of the whale species. Would still be grateful to see some links to even a few of those scientific studies if you have them, especially if they explain the reason so many whales had to be slaughtered each year for the research. Is there a lot of non-lethal research going on too, or do they have to be killed each time?

I’m all for above-board, sustainable harvesting. Have eaten my fair share of whale meat (but don’t really like the texture or flavour), and don’t consider the Japanese to be evil. Quite the opposite, and would love to see the Japanese fishing industry stop their (and their chip-on-the-shoulder apologists) weasley siege mentality, hiding behind the “research” banner, start being open about what’s going on, dealing with it, and figuring out a solution. Just as much as I’d like to see foaming-at-the-mouth anti-whalers calm down a notch.

As mentioned above, I don’t think the Japanese are evil. Overharvesting happens (and not only the Japanese of course). Look at tuna populations now compared to 15 years ago. If whales weren’t overharvested in the first place, none of this would be an issue…

That is because anti-whaling activists insisted on lethal counting of the whale population, arguing number of whales cannot be counted by sight for whales swim around and could be double counted.

The International Whaling Commission is founded to maintain sustainable whaling by setting quota. To set sustainable quota, IWC must known the number and reproduction rates of whales. Anti-whaling group is delaying the counting process by playing with technicalities of statistics, for they know for sure that when the counting process is finalized, it becomes clear that there are enough whales for whaling.

If anti-whaling lobby is to allow counting by sight, that is even better. Let’s count the whales and lift the moratorium of commercial whaling.

Besides the sashimi the shabu shabu meat looked odd. Was it blubber and meat on the end? I’d rather eat frog legs. I might try whale meat if I was offered, but I am not going to go out and hunt down a restaurant that sells it.
