Crayon Shin-chan no more??

September 20th, 2009 by anton

One of Japan’s funniest and most recognizable Manga characters, Crayon Shin-chan (クレヨンしんちゃん), might not be smiling right now.

shin chan

His creator Usui Yoshito (臼井儀人) was reported to be missing after telling his family he was going on a hiking trip to Arafune Mountain (荒船山).

TBS news reported that on the 19th of September 2009, Gunma Police department found a body of a man that appears to have fallen from a steep cliff, facing downwards and has been dead for a few days.

No official announcement has been made but the clothing and resemblance of the body to the missing Usui Yoshito has made the police to speculate that they might have found him.

Gunma Police announced that on the 20th of September 2009, 8:00 PM Japanese time, they are going to deploy 20 policemen to investigate the situation pending any conclusion.

I am sure all Crayon Shin-chan fans are hoping that Usui Yoshito is still out there surviving, but we must be prepared to face the worst.

Update: Kyodo news confirms that it was Usui’s body.

The fact that they mention clothing implies that the face of the dead person has been damaged beyond recognition. Pretty gruesome stuff.

But don’t worry, the author himself will probably turn up in Argentina with a mistress in a few days …

It’s such a shame that due to the horrible English translation of the anime, few people back home will ever know that Usui Yoshihito was a whip smart writer and rock solid cartoonist.

It’s a sad day for the medium and any fan of it.

As a fan of the original, I couldn’t believe what kind of garbage the dub turned it into.

でも、やっぱり子供の頃から見ていたのでかなりがっかりです・・・

His real birth name was Yoshihito, but he was more commonly known as Yoshito.

This post was edited to make his name match the one most commonly used (Yoshito).

Oh no! This is distressing news. :( I feel bad for the guy they found even if it doesn’t turn out to be Usui Yoshihito.

The body has been confirmed to be Usui Yoshito from dental records.

Interestingly, the vast bulk of the Wikipedia article on him is about his death, and the vast bulk of the editing has been since he went missing.
