Giant stone Gundam statue
A giant stone Gundam in the city of Yasu in Shiga Prefecture:

At a height of 4 meters and a weight of 10 tons, it is not quite as big as Tokyo’s 18 meter 35 ton 1:1 scale mobile suit.
It was created about 2 years ago by the owner of a stone sculpting business and has become a local landmark. Check out these Japanese blogs for more photos.

The perfect gravestone for Aso when he is killed in the upcoming election!
I am not usually one for bad political humor, but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this.
This guy rules. I totally want him to design something fun for my patio.
After reading this I did some poking around, and it turns out that some people do use these kind of character carvings as gravestones, though it’s unusual to say the least.

I suspect that in a couple centuries, historians specializing in 21st century East Asian studies will speak of the Japanese as “deeply religious people, writing hundreds of illustrated holy ‘manga’ and crafting stone and metal icons of their guardian spirit, the gundam…”
Brush up on your prefectural Kanji, this bad boy is in Shiga. I was all set to day-trip out to see him too.
Yeah… This statue is in Shiga just off of route 8. I lived in Hikone for 7 years and often saw this bad boy when driving to Moriyama.
I wish someone would make a 1:1 scale Guyver Gigantic Exceed. Now THAT would look impressive (yes I know that would be immense, but still).
