My Darling is a Foreigner: The Movie

Holy crap, Jon Sherr! I went to school with him, both in the US and Japan. I always wondered what happened to him.

Omgosh! Yay for Mao!!

I think he and the woman is two nice looking fellas… I am enthusiastically looking forward to watch this drama even though I haven’t read the manga nor had any idea it even existed.

Just wonder if the couple’s experiences in apartment-hunting will be part of the movie.

You know, the part where they keep getting turned away by racist landlords because “gaijin don’t speak Japanese, always have loud parties, and will suddenly leavae Japan and skip out on rent”

This would be a great opportunity to let the Japanese public learn more about this all-too-common racist issue.

The books are great. I fear the movie will be typically useless mass market J-film crap. Should have hired a Korean director.

Does anyone have the English version of the comics. Amazon say’s that they are out of stock.

It may seem entertaining, but if you analyze the contents of
this film, the depiction of a “foreign” partner enforces
dangerous stereotyping which often results from, and leads to, prejudice and bigotry. It may seem to be a positive light in which the “foreign” partner is depicted, however, this can also have adverse effects on the Japanese psyche surfacing as “Gaijin Akogare” or Foreigner admiration.
If a film was made in a western country titled “My Darling is a Japanese” it would be viewed as nothing but flagrant racism.
