Wondering how many rockets Japan has lobbed into space lately? Here’s a useful graph from the Economist:

Although it looks like Japan is outranked by other countries, I’m sure that JAXA would argue that quality of junk launched into space is more important than quantity.

I’d hardly call Japan a “space player” with their handful of earth orbit satellites and the single lunar and single asteroid probes.

Quality or not – launching a dribble into space is hardly impressive – especially when there are many third rate nations, and even private businesses getting ready to surpass their meager effort.

JAXA is very much a “space player”. Along with France (and sometimes Russia), NASA and JAXA have a great relationship. There are many joint missions, and Japan is especially a player in deep space probes and engines (i.e., not rocket engines to get out of the atmosphere, but the engines that are used once in space).

Exactly, JAXA is doing great coorperations with space agencies of other countries. How many space rockets have been launched by JAXA themselves doesn’t mean a thing.
