Nobu’s doors blocked by protest over bluefin tuna

August 14th, 2009 by James

Remember Nobu, the expensive sushi restaurant that put a warning in its menu telling customers to not order their bluefin tuna dishes? Here’s a follow-up video report from the folks at Don’t Panic Online:

In a related story, Mainichi reports that a proposed ban on Northern bluefin tuna trade “could threaten Japan’s food supply.”

“If we want to eat Blue Fin Tuna sushi then we can at Nobu. We are paying for it.”

Yeah, that makes sense. The “I paid for it” argument.

Yeah, it does, because when the fish gets too expensive, people will stop eating it so much.

That’s fine except the point at which a resource becomes too expensive may be below the point at which it ceases to be sustainable. In which case it makes sense to stop exploiting the resource earlier and allow stocks to regrow.

Of course this is difficult for people to understand, and leads to the tragedy of the commons.

True – my point is only a general comment about how the market can self-regulate. And if the government steps in and subsidises it to artificially deflate the price then forget it.

I don’t think he really did much good for his cause, he just makes himself and people like him look like a bunch of annoying asshats.

Isn’t that vandalism? He would get jail for this in my country.

“isn’t that vandalism?” isn’t it vandalism to hunt a species until it dies out?

think the purpose justifies the means here.

“isn’t it vandalism to hunt a species until it dies out?”
You might want to check the definition of “vandalism” before saying things like that.

p.s. if it was okay to continue fishing (since “people are paying for it”),
then why would the restaurant itself lie about possible extinction and a cooperation with greenpeace?

“it’s okay cause we pay for it.”

sure. that’s why the restaurant itself is lying about a possible extinction and a cooperation with greenpeace.

i don’t mind sushi,
but there are enough sorts of fish that you can eat without having to worry about extinction.

oh yeah, right, you don’t worry…

how is it vandalism? he didn’t vandalize anything.. a simple sign and a bike lock.. harms nothing but business… he could probably get arrested for something, but not vandalism.

I hate hippies. If they were smart, they would all band together, make some super international organization, make tons of money, then spend it to better the planet through fish farms or whatever is the flavor of the month for them.

Greenpeace. Only they stopped at the money part.

Well, maguro could always be substituted by panda or koala. Both of them have made a comeback in recent years. But seriously, I think that maybe soylent green made from hippies could be reformulated to taste like maguro.

Why not do something like protest animal rights in China or dogs being eaten in Korea? Maguro can’t thank you like a pekinese can.
