tea's tea

The North American branch of Japanese tea company Ito En apparently developed the Tea’s Tea brand in an attempt to popularize its tea in the United States. Now they’re bringing it to Japan as an exotic “New York” tea:

Video game makers have done this for years. When an international/English version received extra content, the new version would then be re-released in Japan at a premium price.

I’ve never seen an orange Tea’s Tea in New York. The flavors I’ve seen have been far more ordinary – green, rose, jasmine, etc. Is this new or only in Japan?

I’ve seen regular Ito En tea in New Jersey about two years ago, in the “import” packaging that they’re using for this Teas’ Tea. They wanted $1.50 per 500-ml bottle, and I saw people buying it thinking it was some exotic health drink. I had half a mind to tell them that for that price, you could get two liters of it in any Japanese supermarket!

I’ve never seen this in the US, but I didn’t really care about tea until I moved to Asia.

The first thing I thought of when I saw “Tea’s Tea” is that they were trying to make a play on the phrase “Man’s Man”, as in their tea is the best of teas.

Good as a concept but a failure in application.

As Mark in Yayoi notes, it’s actually “Teas’ Tea”, not “Tea’s Tea”. Perhaps this gives more credence to T’s theory. I’m not teasing!

I saw some “teas’ tea” green tea right next to some o~i ocha a few months back in Hokkaido. Being from NYC I immediately recognized the label, and knew that it was (in NYC at least) simply re-labeled o~i ocha. Anyhow, I ended up buying both to do a taste test, and, well, they were exactly the same!

I wonder how many people realize…
