		<description>I agree. If they had not been used in Japan, the chances that they would have been used in the Korean War would have been far higher, and the bombs would have been far more powerful. To say nothing of the Cold War standoff - the imagery of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was an unarguable warning about how nasty the effects of these bombs were.</description>

		<description>The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed what a terrible weapon even very weak (compared to typical weapons in the US and Russian arsenals) atomic bombs are. Without these examples that made the dire consequences of using atomic bombs clear to everyone the chances of a nuclear war would have been much larger. This does not make the bombings any better but the thought that the victims did not die altogether in vain but saved mankind from murdering itself may at least give a little comfort.</description>
