The story of A-bomb survivor Toshie Une

As some of you may already know, today was the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Here’s a partially-translated “NEWS ZERO” report about Toshie Une, a 90-year-old woman who still remembers the horrors she experienced on August 6, 1945:
An English language write-up of her experience can be found at the Spirit of Hiroshima homepage and her book can be found at Amazon Japan.

Thank you. That was a very touching video. Such a sweet old lady. She reminds me of my grandmother, who would’ve been just a few years older than Une-san this year.

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed what a terrible weapon even very weak (compared to typical weapons in the US and Russian arsenals) atomic bombs are. Without these examples that made the dire consequences of using atomic bombs clear to everyone the chances of a nuclear war would have been much larger. This does not make the bombings any better but the thought that the victims did not die altogether in vain but saved mankind from murdering itself may at least give a little comfort.

I agree. If they had not been used in Japan, the chances that they would have been used in the Korean War would have been far higher, and the bombs would have been far more powerful. To say nothing of the Cold War standoff – the imagery of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was an unarguable warning about how nasty the effects of these bombs were.
