Tokyo Metro runs foreign language commercials on Japanese TV

Tokyo Metro

Tokyo Metro has been running some interesting commercials lately. Each commercial features tourists from a different country being told about the convenience of the Tokyo Metro system in their native language. Japanese subtitles are provided.

Here are the French tourist / Chinese tourist commercials:

There are also English and Korean versions of the commercial, which can be viewed on the CM Gallery section of the Tokyo Heart website.

1) The accent of the English speaker is hard to pick out… Not UK, US, Canadian, Aussie, NZ nor SA…

2) The site says “buffaling” when it’s loading. Love it.

It’s a 100% state-owned company, actually (national government 53.4%, Tokyo Metropolitan government 46.6%). But what’s your point, exactly?

This may seem silly, but what is the prevalence of the French language in Japan? After watching Wasabi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281364/), it seemed like everyone in the movie spoke French right off the bat. I know it was a movie, but even so, could it have been that easy to find so many Japanese people who spoke French?

Do people respect French more than English?

I am wondering whether this multi-lingual campaign is also a somewhat meaningless attempt to bolster their Tokyo Olympic 2016 bid.

The happiest beneficiaries of these TV campaigns must be Dentsu.

Maybe they can extend the series and show us all how to separate our trash…
