اهرام= pyramids…plural form of the word هرم
بطيخ = watermelon
احمر = red (the color)…but it needn’t be included…I’m not too sure why they did

Hmm. What’s next, a ball-shaped melon? No wait, we already have that. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if we get to see a melon shaped lika a banana sometimes in the future. ^^

I think that you’d probably need a few different sized molds as the fruit grows, but your point stands.

DIY
Pyramid watermelon

1. Plant watermelon in your garden (or others if they allow!)
2. Sprinkle and wait until you see the offspring of watermelon
3. built pyramid mould without bottom
4. put the watermelon in the mould by let the branch go through the top of pyramid
5. wait.. wait.. wait
6. bingo! you can sell it for 54,500 yen. Dont forget the King Tut sticker to up the price
7. lets make it a couple of dozen, then we can get rich

Once you know the process of growing watermelons in weird shapes, you will be surprised how simple it is to grow them and hence will definitely find the price of $560 beyond ridiculous.

But I doubt I will get offended if I were to live in Japan. It’s part of the culture and the product is certainly supported by the local economy. Actually if you do some simple calculations, as long as 1 watermelon is sold, that money probably can cover the cost of growing the batch of 16.

I think it’s due to cooking shows where they highlight the main ingredient of a dish, and it always turns out to be some extremely rare veggie or meat that costs an arm and a leg, which they hype up by highlighting the crunch it makes, or the way the juices flow from it when you cook it, or because it is becoming extinct, etc.. Then, of course, you have the talento talking about how great the food is and you can really tell the difference, blah blah blah.

Do you think if Japan ever fully embraces the Internet there will be a collective realization that everything around here is more expensive than it should be and the very idea of a $100 melon or a $50 grape is actually offensive? Or do they already know they’re paying too much and someone’s convinced them that’s OK because they’re getting something special in exchange for all that cash?
