Come to Seiyu, run into your foreign friend

July 12th, 2009 by James

A commercial for Seiyu (Japanese Walmart) shows that the prices are so good that you’re bound to run into all your friends there (including a foreign dude):

More explanation from Mark:

Just showed my wife and she immediately understood it, and then explained it to me. You have representatives from all the electronics shops – Kojima Denki, Yamada Denki, Bic Camera and Takata (from the TV shopping channel) – so they’re saying that even people from those stores go to Seiyu as the prices are so cheap.

Because “Bic” isn’t a Japanese name, Bic-san had to be a foreigner.

There’s a Seiyu that I go into once in awhile and I was really confused as to why the signs looked like WalMart signs and as to why they were selling Ecobags with the WalMArt logo on them. The link above puts it all together for me, LOL.

I recommend that lady not take her “I heart KY” bag with her to gaikoku.

Yeah, in the UK KY is a widely known make of medical lubricant gel.

Yep, that’s the typical “charisma man” you’ll find in Japan.

I think that the campaign is very clever, and that the KY thing is a declaration of war towards the Japanese retailers. Something like I don`t care of what you`re thinking, I`ll start selling bento at 300 yen, electronics at very low prices and I`ll use comparative ads too!
