Japanese girl screaming contest

July 11th, 2009 by James

this guy is having a lot of fun

Female students at a high school in Fukui participate in a screaming contest:

Summer vacation is about to begin, so the school and local police held the contest to help teach the girls to make some noise if they run into suspicious individuals. A little gadget is used measured the decibel levels of their shrieks and shouts for help. (According to the report, a 90 decibel scream is required to scare off an attacker.)

The report doesn’t mention anyone being named the winner of the contest, but their teacher does a pretty good job of loudly shouting an insult at the guy.

Do you find this to be a good example of practical crime prevention training?

I could be wrong but I think this time it isn’t useless. Indeed I think it could be more efective than the self-defense courses.

Screaming is a recommended self-defence technique, but so is stamping on an attacker’s foot and poking them in the eyes, and no training was given.

It’s not the advice that’s weird, it’s the fact that it is presented as a TV show segment.

Those screams are as lame as the school uniforms.

Ugh, somehow I don’t think this is something the majority of Japanese people need help with. I hear plenty of girls making high pitched squeals in Tokyo as it is. Maybe they should teach a class on “Screaming, When is it Appropriate?” (When you are being attacked by criminals? Appropriate. When Yoko has a cute new phone? Not Appropriate)

And really, I don’t see most criminals being “scared off” by a scream that hits X decibels rather than Y. Where did they get this figure? Was a survey involved? “If you were a criminal, just how many decibels would you be frightened by? Hmmm, 60? Interesting…”

But seriously, self defence would be better, and considering everyone has keitai these days, why not spend some time going over how to quickly and efficiently call the police for help? It’s no good floundering in the heat of the moment.

They should be teaching these girl to laugh and make jokes about size rather than scream in a pathetic and helpless manner.
Honestly, flashing is the stupidest form of…sexual abuse? Can it even be called that? Anyway, far better solution is to laugh at them, stand there cross-armed with an unimpressed look on your face or if you’re feeling angry, kick them in the dick (it’s on display, so why not?).

This is just silly, you’d think the police are actually trying to help the flashers by giving them the thrill they’re seeking.
