Japan tops World’s Best Tourists ranking

The BBC reports that Japanese tourists have come out on top of a “World’s Best Tourists” ranking:
The study by travel company Expedia asked 4,500 hotels worldwide to rank tourists on their behaviour.
Japanese tourists – seen as clean and tidy, polite, quiet and uncomplaining – came top for the third year running.
French travellers made amends on elegance – classed third – as well as for their discretion and cleanliness.
France, Spain, and Greece were named the countries with the worst tourists.

Then why does the “Japanese Tourist” stereotype exist? Is it just blatant xenophobia?
It is. That and the result of cartoons and stupid ’80s sitcoms.
What, going around in crowds and taking photos.
Is that a bad thing to do?
Not really, I just don’t know why they get stereotyped if they’re apparently the best of the bunch.
1. This is ratings from the HOTELS, not the other tourists or tourist sites.
2. There are good stereotypes and bad stereotypes. Just because there is a stereotype of the Japanese Tourist does not mean people hate them.
Britain and Germany in the top10?
I guess they didn’t ask Hotels by the Mediterranean. Or any other seaside resorts.
How would they be sure that a tourist is from a certain country? Most Westerners have little idea about the difference between Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans. Plus it can be sometimes impossible to tell Americans and Canadians apart.
I don’t know if you’ve ever stayed in a hotel before, but they usually have a record of guests passport details.
Worst dressed were Americans. No surprise there.
It is really curious that only Japan shows in the list and no other country from Asia…No chinese, koreans, etc
The British and the Germans were on the list.
Thus, the list is bogus.
They obviously didn’t include British stag weekend tourists in their calculations.
Please read the article before making uninformed comments.
Britons didn’t fair well in the Europe:
“…in Europe, the British were seen by the hoteliers as the worst behaved.”
As for Americans:
“US tourists also got top marks for generosity, as the biggest spenders and tippers.
But they fell short on other counts as the least tidy, the loudest, the worst complainers and the worst dressed. “
Yes the Canadians are at least in third position! Didn’t know Britain would top us though kinda humiliating XD
Just wondering..but why the hell am I supposed to dress nicely and be tidy (do the waiters’ and hotel maids’ WORK for them) when I’m ON VACATION?!?!?!
And especially if I’m laying out fat tips to those same waiters and maids for cleaning up my mess, because I’m ON VACATION.
Take those BS categories away and I think Americans do even better.
No one said that you CAN’T look like a slob.
They just said that you DO.
(Laying out “fat tips” doesn’t make you look like less of a slob, it just makes you look like a generous slob.)

If I remember correctly, the released this ranking last year as well and back then, Japan was also in the top spot.
As some people here seemed to be surprised that Germany is in the top ten list, may I ask why that surprises you that much?
I guess hotels have other priorities when it comes to judging people…
