solar eclipse japan

A total solar eclipse will take place on July 22nd, and it will be somewhat visible in certain areas of Japan. The above map from the Yomiuri tells us how much of the eclipse will be visible from Japan’s major cities. Folks in Okinawa should get a pretty nice view.

The dark blue line indicates the part of the earth where there should be total darkness. Only a few small Japanese islands fall within that zone, and most of which are accessible to tourists. Find out about them here (in English!).

they are NOT accessible anymore though
I tried to book a flight to Amami 2 months ago (can’t book JAL flights more than 2 months before your flight date) and all were fully booked 2 weeks around the eclipse day – JAL had sold all the seats through JTB tours way before opening naked flight reservations

only possibility left is to take the boat: 11 hours from Kagoshima

Total solar eclipse 2009 would be the most perfect total solar eclipse in twenty-first century according to some people.
