eMobile monkeys

July 8th, 2009 by James

A commercial currently running on Japanese TV in which monkeys inform us that eMobile wireless broadband now works even in underground shopping malls and subway stations:

Last year eMobile pulled one if its TV ads because a small group of African Americans had complained that it was “racist” for eMobile’s monkey mascot to wear a suit and have a promotional campaign for Obama-like “change.”

I loved those Change! ads so much, I wish there was somewhere I could find the posters. I stopped participating in the Tokyo for Obama group after that kerfuffle because nearly everyone in the group got up in arms about the whole thing and it became too ridulous.

Last year I bought an expensive data card from eMobile just to find out that eMobile’s driver only interacts with Japanese Windows. No return possible, no sale to anyone else permitted, a 100% loss of money. A complaint that the Japanese OS requirement was not mentioned by eMobile (at that time it wasn’t) was answered with “Oh sorry, we forgot to mention this. But unfortunately we can’t take back the device or cancel your contract.”

Wow that sucks really hard. I wonder what the problem is exactly when trying to use it with a non-Japanese Windows.

I had this problem with the dictionary installer for my Casio denshi jisho. Fortunately I got it to work by using Microsoft AppLocale, a little free tool by Microsoft that runs applications in a sandbox with the desired locale. But it only works with executable applications, so I guess it wouldn’t work with a system driver. But if only the connection application was the troublemaker, the tool could probably have helped you.

I remember just now that I could have gooten a Japanese windows license for free while I was a student. Now it’s too late. :/

What is the Japanese fascination with monkeys? And why are they anthropomorphized so much?

Because as atheists, Japanese people believe in Darwin’s theories. ;)
