CNN reports on Japanese love hotels
A CNN video report about how Japan’s love hotel industry is doing well despite the recession:
“I’d hate to use the term “recession-proof,” but it’s certainly proven very resilient over the last six to nine months,” said Steve Mansfield, CEO of New Perspectives, which operates six love, or “leisure,” hotels in Japan.
One of them, the Bonita Hotel in Isawa, boasts a 257 percent occupancy rate. Rooms can be rented for three to 24 hours.
Mansfield’s company estimates the industry in Japan pulls in $40 billion a year in revenue.
The story is almost identical to a Reuters’ article that appeared in March – they even interviewed the same Stephen Mansfield. (Apparently they couldn’t find a Japanese person that owns any love hotels.)

how the hell can a room be occupied 247% of the time?
Since Love Hotels charge hourly rates, some rooms are probably being rented out twice or even three times a day by different couples.
so, if a room is used once a day its had a 100% occupancy rate? surely it would make more sense to measure it in hours.
I wonder how many times a day the room gets cleaned. *shudders*
Hmmmm….that’s a really vague story….
They could have explained a bit more and shown some siller rooms….boring CNN, boring!
Another reason why its so “popular” is, because of its culturally polite to not disturb the neighbors. Not implying in the “adult” sense, but just in general. Some couples just go there to talk and some go there to unwhine. CNN showed the extravagant leisure items that are usually at a love hotel that most japanese apartments don’t have.
I drive by Hotel Bonita all the time. I almost went there once, they got 2 S&M Bondage rooms!! (not a joke.)
Hey… what happened to Kyung Lah?
… does it matter? Still shoddy journalism by CNN (”The story is almost identical to a Reuters’ article that appeared in March – they even interviewed the same Stephen Mansfield. “)
That’s called efficient use of the research budget.
