Happiness Realization Party’s fear mongering promotional video

The Happiness Realization Party, the political wing of the Happy Science religious movement, has produced this scary promotional video and uploaded it to YouTube:
A summary:
- Salarymen sit in an office watching news bulletins about North Korea launching missiles.
- Large explosions are being reported in Osaka and Nagoya.
- Missiles are headed for the Kanto region. Patriot missile batteries have failed to shoot them down.
- Panic grips the office, but it is too late. The flash of a nuclear explosion covers the screen and Tokyo is reduced to a radioactive wasteland.
- Viewers are then urged to consider the facts. North Korea has a lot of missiles with the range to hit Japan, and its only a matter of time before they can mount nukes on them. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that Kim Jong-il isn’t preparing to launch them at Japan!
- And don’t forget China! They’ve got a huge military and they are supporting North Korea, and they’ve got missiles too!
- By 2020, China could possess more military power than the United States. (As the shot zooms in on the deck of an aircraft carrier, we discover that it is Chinese!) If this happens, it is possible that China could advance on Taiwan and Okinawa.
- After the seizure of Taiwan, it is likely the Chinese fleets could block the vital sea lanes that supply Japan with its food and fuel. The current Japanese government has no concrete plan in place to deal with such a situation.
- If nothing is done to stop this, Japan will become a colony of China/North Korea!
- What can you do to prevent the utter and complete destruction of the Japanese nation? Vote for the Happiness Realization Party. They want to drop the pacifist clause from the Japanese constitution, build up Japan’s defenses, and strengthen Japan’s alliance with the United States.

I think these guys get a lot of their stuff from there. Come to think of it, all the angels and crosses and stuff must have inspired them.
Komeito = Soka Gakkai/SGI, Happiness Realization Party = Happy Science … so far two cults thinly disguised a political parties. And better yet, one is a member of the ruling coalition. Will we get any more? Hopefully not!
I guess the only downside to lacking a strong religious presence (in the classical sense of Abrahamic/Dharmic religions) is the ease of which pulled-out-of-the-ass cults can take root in the population.
Well, ok everything they say can happen,..CAN HAPPEN. I’m I worried about it? Hey, I live in a city that is overdue for a massive earthquake. I don’t worry about a lot of things.
If the Japanese constitution were to be changed would it protect Japan or stop the potential shown in the clip? Not bloody likely. In fact, Japan rearming might just scare the hell out of the rest of the world and cause what can happen TO HAPPEN.

Absolutely ridiculous, this video create nothing but unrest among the citizen of japan and ruin the relationship between Japan and its neighbouring nations. Talking about colony, it seems to me that japan has been colonized by America since the end of WW2 till now with more and more U.S military based in Japan. It’s kinda feel like ‘do what i say or i will bombard Tokyo rite away and sink your nation.’
In terms of military power competition between U.S and China, it seems to me that China has lower profile compared to U.S, which is showing their military power by interfering politics in foreign nations in the name of ‘Peacekeeper of the World’. I think such situation has to be balanced with the existence of another strong military power, like the theory of Ying and Yang
The US can’t just bombard Japan and get away with it. The EU won’t back nonsense like that, and the whole world will hit the US economically. (It should anyway) What runs the top nations now is economics, so if Japan were to drive the US away from its shores, the US would probably impose tariffs on all imports from Japan.
Anyway, a decent way to battle nukes is simply to keep fighting. The world has changed from half a century ago, and with demilitarization cropping up more and more, a country that uses nuclear weapons without some sort of half-assed “self-defense” reason (like the US did with Hiroshima and Nagasaki and years after the beginning of an already initiated war), will be labeled a demon and will be assaulted, or at least shut out from all world relations. Then said country will have to win the war to legitimize the use of the weapons. If they lose, the government will probably be annihilated and the people subject to rule from an extraterritorial or at least a countryman with strings attached to other foreign leadership.
Yeah…U.S would not do such think but IF japan wanted to end the treaty and build its own military force, i’m sure U.S would definite do something to cripple its economy and lots of issues in WW2 would be raised in order to gain control again on Japan…by the way, i personally don’t think that U.S actually cares about what EU has to say cause U.S don’t even bother to follow UN’s decision.

I personally don’t agree with that cause seems to me that winning the war means everything…China is building up its military power rite now and has not yet shows any unpleasant intention toward any country but it seems to me that U.S has been giving out lots of excuses to sabotage China just because China will soon became a strong nation which is sufficient to threaten U.S position as the most influential nation around the globe.
Colonization doesn’t mean what you think it means, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never, ever heard the US threaten to sink Japan if they don’t do as they’re told.
Of course u have never heard of it because Japan has been playing alongside with U.S all this while…it would be too obviouse and stupid to directly threaten Japan with military force, plus the treaty was signed and extended because Japan has lost the war in WW2.
These guys don’t really come across like a particularly happy bunch to me.

I don’t consider it unlikely that Japan will end up in some sort of pseudo-colonial arrangement with the PRC in the future, though I doubt it will be as a result of military conquest. Rather, I could see a demographically declining Japan being convinced by China, once it reaches world power status, to selectively open its borders.
I can’t help but feel that this video will become another cult classic like Kouichi Toyama’s crazy revolutionary speech. Personally, I think this video has more style than Mr. Toyama, and it has nice orchestrated music and a goofy “Happiness Realization Party” name to back it up.
I’m surprised some people actually believe China is going to turn Japan into a colony. China has better things to do than that.
China’s Communist party doesn’t roll with economics. Turning Japan into some sort of whipping boy would seriously elate the party and many of its followers in my opinion because they function through politics. As a group they’re more concerned about how they are perceived. Politics runs in and out of the daily life of a mainland Chinese with rampant censorship. The people just ignore it because they have faces to feed and they have to go through or warily around the system to do it. People in the outskirts of the country are just policed and ethnically non-Han are periodically executed for being an “agitator” or something (especially the muslim ones since 9/11… they might soon all become a resistance and “agitate” after a while if they’re fatalist enough). Things may be changing a-la Taiwan… but… not anytime soon. I think the “country” is too large for that.
Others have said it, too: where’s the happy in this? Happy like the guys rocking back and forth and drooling in straight-jackets.
Still, I think there are people who fear this. There was a hailstorm in our town ten years ago and it was very dramatic, with rushing winds and darkened skies. I was in a shopping mall and half a dozen of the people around me thought the North Koreans had launched a missile attack.
Japan is not exactly awash with natural resources or wide open spaces. The only reason it`s worth anything at all is because the cities are full of industrious people. If you nuke the cities full of people, what are you left with?

NK has started advertising its own brand of domestically brewed beer on its state TV having bought a brewery from the UK. If they can drink like the Brits they will soon be too hammered to launch a missile attack.

Hahaha, and post-WWII political history shows that wouldn’t happen in a long shot. Even if the LDP screws up again like they did in the mid-90s.
Yeah, as far as it goes for now, the security treaties remain in effect. I am sure that this will become an issue once something in the region or world politics changes and requires Japan to be on her own defenses, but this scenario is pretty crazy.
As far as nuclear weapons go if Japan were to be able to rearm again, I think the memories of the past usage of them would be enough to convince most of the franchised voters to vehemently oppose nuclear weapons in Japan (which is the current consensus). Of course, since the cold war you can’t really expect to defend well without a few, but sanctions will be threatened if Japan were to do that in “this” situation. And…in all likelihood, it’s not going to happen.
I think Japan has a right to defend itself. I’m glad I don’t live next door to North Korea. As for China, I don’t think that North Korea would carry on being so antagonistic unless they secretly new they had China’s support.
I think it is about time for Japan to stand by ourselves.
Since the defeat in WWII, Japan has been depended on USA.
If we are one of the leading countries of all over the world right now, we can’t just think about our country, rather has to think abut protecting ourselves and other countries.
It could erupt any second(If you check on CNN news, it is so obvious.).
Also, people should put things in perspective.
Do not just finish things by personal biases.
The important thing is not who is right, but WHAT IS RIGHT.
I think what they are trying to say is right.

I disagree that Japan will ever be a colony or direct territory of China. However I do subscribe that China plans to do what some Chinese think-tanks have pushed in recent years; the idea that Japan could one day join a Chinese led union, set in a similar style to the old Soviet Union with hybrid elements of the modern day European Union.
In such a political system, as Deng Xiaoping proposed in 1983, would have Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, and China as member states/provinces. It was quite perceivable that other Asian nations make no major decisions without China being informed first, and that in the future those nations join under this umbrella.
Hence one day Japan being a part of a Chinese union, politically, but not economically, and somewhat distinct in sovereignty enough to appease the people while giving China positive PR? Possible, even a good chunk of university students in Beijing and elsewhere are pushing this idea.
Do I personally like this? No. Do I think the Happiness Party’s fearmongering should be encouraged? At the same time, no.
Coincidences: legislative elections are being called today in Japan for August 30th, at the very same time when Kim Jong II has been declared, by two sources from Washington and Seoul as seriously affected by cancer. Something is bound to occur in that area: let’s hope for better. Still the rest of the world may not just remain contented by ignoring the repeated and intensified threats from Pyongyang. Freedom is at stake for both Japan and South Korea. Not to mention than -in the worst case- more democracies should suddenly fear then for a bad domino game collapsing from the Pacific sector in the context of weakened economics throughout the world, leaving us all then in a strong sense of “déjà vu” from several decades ago.
On the short term these geostrategical concerns are probably no reason for an escalation of weapons around (조선동해; 朝鮮東海 / 日本海) Japanese / Corean seas, yet definitely confirm populations concerned in a natural right to protect themselves.
Do not lump the Soka Gakkai with Happy Science, They are two completely different things! I have been a member of Soka Gakkai in America for 25 years and it is not based on something created 20 minuted ago. Nichiren founded the teachings from 1258 and Makaguchi created a lay society to protect it from the priesthood. The entry into politics was to bring the voice of the common people to politics outside of the Marxist-Left/ Emperor-Right in Japanese politics.
And Ikeda threw out Nichiren’s teachings in favor of his own ideas about two decades ago. Don’t even mention Nichiren Shoshu and SGI in the same sentence – they are not the same thing at all. SGI is a “religion” unto itself.
