British teens copy Japanese gyaru fashion
BBC radio reports that young people in Britain are copying Japan’s hideous gyaru style:

Young people in the UK have been learning about the intricacies of ‘manba’ by making friends on the other side of the world using social networking sites and learning how to re-create the style through videos on YouTube.

Remember that it’s not just “hideous”, it’s “intentionally hideous”.
Rebellious clothing and fashions are always popular with a small part of every population.

That’s more of the “Ganguro” or Yamanbe style. I LOVE Gyaru! The egg cover model type though.

Oh dear god why?
I mean, I’m all for people dressing how they like, it just boggles my mind how something like this has lasted as long as it has.

Both “scenes” are a cry for help. Neither is better, both are equally horrible.

The part I find more creepy then people outside of Japan doing it is that one of those is a GUY…. even in Japan I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a guy dressing like that.

I’ve seen these kids in London’s Japan Centre (big, central J food/book store) before and I’m in awe.
They’ve obviously studied the (albeit defunct) sub-culture thoroughly and get everything right, right down to the Disney towelling.
It’s quite disheartening and somewhat surprising that there are negative comments here, on a site focused on Japanese culture. This is an incredible example of reverse maneru , and presumably the majority of visitors to this site have an interest in Japanese culture. Can it really be fair to criticise these kids while listening to your Gackt MP3s, building your Gundam doll or jerking off to your hentai?
Also, so what if it’s “10 years too late”? I still see enough kids in Nirvana T-Shirts or dressing like it’s 1954. Perhaps they’re simply spearheading an international revival.

On the one hand it looks ugly, on the other hand we are talking about English women…, so it shouldn’t matter all that much.

Oh yes, I remember seeing this in the London Underground some time back, thought it was just a cosplay for a convention or something.
Had no idea it was an actual lifestyle choice catching on here >.>

It’s probably no more than 10 people doing it.
It’s kinda ironic, seems as London is the World’s most fashionable city.

It’s not exactly becoming a national phenomenon. I’m from Britain and haven’t seen any of it.

oh i think these guys are soo cool! Near the japan center in London there is a print club on the second floor of the China Town mall and they have been there (the owner put their photo on the wall- they don’t always look like that as the owner has shown us photos of them in normal clothes)my friend and i are fascinated by the effort they put in, plus we love telling other customers that they are boys hahah.
Plus even though they might be behind the times japan styles wize, you should give these guys a break, its amazing to see how trends and styles can transgress cultural borders, plus what makes them any different looking from the chavey overly faked tanned bimbo fake ‘wag’ girls? At least they look like they are having fun

Well these are obviously dummies who really don’t keep up to date with actual gyaru fashion. These days gyaru still wear pounds of makeup but they are also into actually tanning and not just painting black all over the face. If you wanna see how thety look today just look at Ayumi Hamasaki, Sifow, Koda Kumi, Namie Amuro and more… They may not blend in with society but they sure don’t make fools of themselves like they use to.
