Ordinary North Koreans know about Kim Jong-un

Reporters for FTV ask North Koreans if they know about the decision to make Kim Jong-un successor to the DPRK regime:

Both the people on the other side of a border fence and a North Korean restaurant in China are aware of Kim Jong-un’s new position. The soldier farmers at the border also know their country has nuclear weapons, and shout that anyone who starts a war with North Korea will be killed.

I wish I could understand everything in the video, but I can say that North Koreans are in for a rude awakening if the government there is overturned and the country is opened to the rest of the world. They have a strange outlook on the world, and it will be shattered by an influx of foreign culture. I wonder how that will go over?

Westerners making fun of Cuba or North Korea for having old cars and TVs is truly a cruel and absurd sight. That’s what decades of foreign-imposed sanctions does to a people. Embargos don’t work and they only legitimize whoever’s in power.

Imposed isolation is the most cruel torture in today’s world because the only ones suffering are the people. Dictators have an excuse to consolidate their power.

Please, next time, think who you’re actually making fun of.

The North Koreans need to wake up out of their pods, put down the kool-aid, and pick up weapons to win their freedom. Every civilization in history has, when things have gotten as bad as they have in NK, had a revolution. We’re making fun of the fact that NK people seem perfectly happy to starve to death for Dear Leader. It’s hard not to ridicule the ridiculous.

Think for a second. It’s very difficult for them to organize in secrecy without triggering a crack-down and even if they do organize, go to the streets or try to take down the government, they’ll be arrested by the army or killed as insurgents. Now ask yourself the question: what gives the government such power? The answer is simple: Kim Jong Il has remained strong for so long because of the enemy from outside – the one that blocks the borders and isolates the country. If the West hadn’t tried to isolate NK and Cuba for so long, the dictatorship you see today wouldn’t exist, or would be much weaker. If it had been given the opportunity, NK would have stopped building nukes long ago, just like Libya.

You know people have to stop using the term “armchair revolutionary” since it no longer applies in a time when entire wars can be fought from behind a computer screen. I know the North Koreans don’t have such technology, but simple farmers have given birth to some of the nastiest weaponry. It won’t be easy, but they could rise up. People power has defeated dictatorship in the past, and it can do so now in NK’s case.

I realize what I’m suggesting may seem like suicide to you, but the fate that awaits them if they don’t act is, IMO much worse. There can be no revolution without blood and sacrifice. they can slowly starve to death singing Kim’s praises, or they can fight for a better future and probably die for it. Can you say though, that there’s any other way to remove these people from power? Do you honestly think that “NK would have stopped building nukes long ago”, given the opportunity? What opportunity do you speak of?

Pardon me, but I think your assessments are out of touch. Revolutions can be won without bloodshed as long as the government isn’t very strong. We’ve recently had many “colored” revolutions of the sort. The same could have happened in NK had the West not given the Kim family the excuse to turn the country into a fortress.

And no, “entire wars aren’t fought from behind the computer screen”. When you suggest that North Koreans “wake up out of their pods, put down the kool-aid”, and go spill some of their blood, while typing comments on JapanProbe, you are indeed being an armchair revolutionary.

NK is a tragic country with a suffering people, but it’s unfair to dismiss it as “bonkers”. The situation is actually not so complicated – isolation feeds dictators and starves the people. It doesn’t work, so it should be lifted immediately and everywhere. Even in Lybia, which is just as “bonkers” as NK, if not more, the dictator Ghadafi abandoned his nuclear weapons program and Libya “opened up” on its own beacuse it wasn’t threatened for a very long time (about 20 years since Reagan bombed it).

If NK had been left unthreatened for that long, it would have opened up as well.
