Bobby Ologun goes ape

June 23rd, 2009 by James

Nigerian-Japanese TV talento Bobby Ologun visits a zoo with his kids, going crazy when he encounters chimpanzees:

Bobby comes from Africa and claims he knows the chimps. His attempts to “talk” to them in monkey language are not very successful, and he is shocked when they become angry.

Any shred of respect I might have been holding out for that man has been tossed out the window. I always left open the possibility that I somehow might have been misinterpreting his act over the years and that there might be more to him than the TV appearances implied, but frankly I don’t care anymore.

I don’t know why Bobby Ologun doesn’t have his own show. If this segment was on Bobby Ologun TV show and not some variety show, I wouldn’t be upset.

He actually does have a show ["Bobby's Stadium"], but I think it is only aired on Saitama TV – a local network:

Way to take enlightened understanding back about fifty years, Bobby. (Clap clap.)

Is there any Nigerian or other African organization around to complain about this guy? Or is he held up as a success story?

I think all the other Nigerians are busy sending me e-mails about how their husband General So-and-so died suddenly leaving 100 million USD which he stole from the central treasury and how they now need to borrow my bank account to launder said funds.

Luckily my email filter catches most of the 419 scammer mails nowadays.

I just wish I had a filter for the verbal spam I get from the Nigerians in Roppongi trying to get me to follow them to their club/store/whatever.

“I just wish I had a filter for the verbal spam”
Stun guns. Or pepper spray. Your choice – depends if you want the spam turned into a low gurgle or a high-pitched scream.

Which makes him different from any other terebi tarento how, exactly?

They’re all whores when you get right down to it. All that is left is the haggling over price.

Maybe, but I find his particular means of selling out far more concerning than the average “Look at me, I have no dignity!” Japanese tarento. At least when it comes to segments like this.

What an idiot.

And usually a mix of 2 races produces cute kids that grow up to be good looking people ….well, usually.

This is offensive on so many levels. Where to start? What’s up with those kids? Seriously. Are they in makeup? BLACKFACE? Really. Please tell me it ain’t so.

Those are his kids and that’s how they naturally look. I think they are cute.

I watched this TV show. In contrast to this skit, Bobby looked to have succeeded in verbally communicating with an elephant in another skit. Every time he talked something to the elephant, it stared at him as if it understood something.

Except for some of his facial expressions, I dont usually see Bobby doing much thats overtly playing into black stereotypes. Quite the contrary, now that he has been around for many years he is recently portrayed as a successful hard-working family man (I almost never see him without his kids recently). This is partly owing to the fact that he took Japanese citizenship in 2007. If anything his character juxtaposes sympathetic “noble savage” images with slapstick antics and intentional Japanese mistakes that are doubly effective because he is a comical black guy.

In this clip, I don’t see this so much as “he’s black so obviously he has kinship with chimps.” If the above commenter is correct he seems to be trying the same gag with all the animals.
