The Nippon Foundation has assembled a team of scholars and produced a list of 100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan. The list appears to be aimed at serious scholars, but there are some titles general readers would probably enjoy.

The foundation has plans to expand the list to include up to 300 titles. Unfortunately, quite a few of the books currently on the list are not readily available for sale and some are enormously expensive academic tomes – you’ll need to raid a university library to get your hands on them.
