12,000 yen McDonalds coupon book can purchase over 22,000 yen worth of food

McDonald’s Japan has begun to sell a special coupon booklet for 12,000 yen (the exact amount everyone will receive from the government as an economic stimulus gift). As we can see from the demonstration in this FTV news clip, the coupons can buy quite a lot of food:

If all used at once, it can apparently feed 29 people. If one redeems the coupons for the most expensive menu items available, one can buy 22,890 worth of food – quite a good deal.

The coupon books will sold until July, and the coupons will be valid until November 14th.

In the end, it’s a good deal, but is anyone going to be willing to spend so much on a single coupon booklet? Especially from McDonalds – does it have the poor health image in Japan that is prevalent in the Western world?

From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t have that image at all. I remember all of my friends in the US hating McDonalds and thinking it was gross, but here as far as image goes it doesn’t seem to be any different from your average cafe. They’re always running eye-catching commercials and holding campaigns that seem to be pretty successful. Some of the McDonalds I’ve seen here even have really nice interiors too.

They had these in America for Valentine Day, but they cost a lot less ($5), had less cupouns, and many stores didn’t sell them

So in 6 months, you’d be eating 29 medium-size servings of French Fries, so about 1 every 6 days!

Apparently this coupon book is a Joke*, the “food” (if you can use this word with maccas) that is available with the coupons is pretty lame. you might use the good coupons up quickly and then be stuck with a big ole bunch of crappy coupons at the end.
Not that it it matters; I never eat at ronnies anyway, give me Yoshinoya or ramen anyday for a cheap fix.
This coupon book would have perfect though for Morgan Spurlock when he was on his “supersize me” quest – would have saved him a quite a whack!

If I had 22,000 yen to play around with, I’d spend it on tachi-kui soba. And I’ll bet I’d get a lot better value and nourishment from that than I would from a MacDonald’s coupon. How sad that the world’s most famous American food import should be so unhealthy and expensive.

I like the idea of businesses coming up with fun ways to siphon the stimulus money from our pockets, but…I just wish a few places other than a fast food dump were offering things like this. Maybe we’ll see more getting in on the game as the cash starts hitting the bank accounts. Uniqlo, Animate…I’m looking in your direction!
