I think they need to look up the definition of "police state". It sounds like they may have based this list more on something like Government surveillance of it's citizens through CCTV or monitoring internet traffic. Very confusing list in my opinion.

sorry to burst any of you guys/gals bubbles but most of us here in the united states of america have at a minimum more guns than we have hands. that being said, they can observe us all they want, but once they start going door to door police state style the "police" casualties are going to mount exponentially. not saying we won't die as well police states are brutal. but remember, USA is famous for 2 things, being ignorant, and having lots of guns in the hands of the citizenry. most would not call an american ignorant to his/her face, because of the guns we have. and the nukes we have. and the army/navy/marines/airforce we have any one of the 4 easily being capable of defeating any other country on the planets entire military. so we'd have a tough fight, and the government might win in the end, but we've still got our guns and if we die then let us die fighting for freedom. that is the attitude that has kept america free for almost 250 years, and that is the attitude which will keep it free.

Counter point: The United States is far more free than most countries including those listed below the US on that list.

I'm not a fan of recent laws in the US that grants the government more control in monitoring citizens, but the idea that "liberal" countries that encourage nanny state-ism are more free than the US is absurd.

You could be typimg from an internet cafe SayWhat. That US and UK are infamous surveillence police states in nothing new. Try googling surveillence or something and you see other reports. UK and US are right on par with the worst dictatorships in the world when it comes to spying on their own citizens. Obviously these governments are going to come up with various reasons to why they need to read every single email, tap every phone call, take your finger print without you being charged with a crime, be able to arrest you without a charge and detain you for much longer time than before etc. This is what is happening in places such as US and UK. Countries which used to pride itself for freedom and liberty. People should realize that their countries are sleep walking and entering a Geroge Orwellian surveillence police state. Soon people in US and UK will be microchipped like dogs and some people will still fail to realize that they live in a surveillence police state. Thats how ignorant many people are. (I did not mean you Saywhat. )about this issue. An awarenes is important. In some caces surveillence is good though but there needs to be some kind of balance here.

Wow...you guys really came out of the woodwork on this one eh? Tell me, if I have no internet connection, how am I writing this Roger?

My critique of the study was not disputing the fact that it MAY be true. Just seeing what some private corporations have achieved in terms of data collection, storage and indexing (i.e. Google) is scary. Who knows what goes on in the back alleys of government.

What I DO have a beef with is this pseudo-science. What this company has done is create a study that LOOKS as though real research has been done even though no real evidence is supplied. The reason people like Roger here believe it is because it is based on popularly held fears, i.e. the "evil other" such as China, North Korea, "the man".

But this practice is nothing new. Companies have been using Spin Doctors for decades in order to move product. I was merely trying to point out that this "study" shouldn't be taken seriously because there is no evidence or sources supplied. And before you flame me go take a look for yourself. Their "data" is just a simple excel spread sheet with the numbers 1 to 5 sprinkled throughout the categories and no explanation as to how they arrived at their conclusions.

HOW DANGEROUS THE DATABASE STATE IS

http://blip.tv/file/1883559

I thought Japan would be higher up on the list because living there I felt I was in Trumans World where every single move I took was monitored. Shibuya is one of the most surveillenced areas on this planet. Not only does the government have hundreds of secret cameras to monitor us you they also have these devices where they send subtle light sound frequencies to numb your brains. Basically the people in the Shibuya crossing is being used as test rats for the government.

US and UK are good examples of how so-called democratic countries are on par with the worst kind of authoritarian states when it comes to electronic surveillence police states. Let's agree to a fact. America is not a free country. American freedom is fake freedom. EU is following in US's footsteps. Japan will also follow in USA's footsteps.

There are so many examples and facts that I can bring up, I am suprised to hear the response from SayWhat? Seems you live in a rural place with no internet connection but no need to worry the US government knows every single detail about your computer habits.

The FBI developed the computer programs "Magic Lantern" and CIPAV, which they can remotely install on a computer system, in order to monitor a person's computer activity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_surveillance

The one reason I can come to think of why Japan is only at number 19 is not because the Japanese govenrment respects human rights more than US or UK, infact they don't. Japan is a pseudo fascist police state where useless cops in kobans like to stop random gaijins and other "weird looking" people and try to arrest them so that it looks good on the records. The reasons I can come to think of is, many people in the Japanese government are old geezers and useless. They don't know anything about computers. The cops are useless. Despite Japan being a higly technological advanced country many people in Japan do not know anything about electronics and computers. But with time the Japanese government will try to find out every single detail about you from what sox you wear to how many times a week you watch porn on the internet. The other reason I can come to think of is that Japan is still a cash society unlike in Europe and US where everything is Visa/master cards. This makes it easier to trace where and how we spent our money.

Japan can now plant fake evidence on you if they want to jack up the stats for unresolved cases if it's suits them.

I don't know how they got their numbers, but they seem to be based on reality. I live in Bulgaria and there's almost no restriction on Internet freedom, while in the US people are afraid of punishment for downloading illegal mp3s.

Countries such as UK and US have sleep walked into a surveillence society. Governments use a "threat to national security" or "terrorism" as excuses to monitor our every single move and strip away liberites and human rightrs including the tight for privacy which too is a human right.

Unfortunately they provide no evidence as to HOW they got the number from 1 to 5 for each category...

No sources, no evidence...seems like a bogus study designed to incite fear and move product to me.
