The truth about Bobby Ologun, a Nigerian-born comedian whose act is built on the idea that he is an idiot who can’t speak proper Japanese:

The show, which aired on Children’s Day, included celebrities and their kids sharing funny anecdotes. In one portion of the show, the children asked questions to their parents. Bobby’s son asked, “Why is my dad an idiot on TV when he acts normal at home?”

Why is this a big shock, Most comedians are like that. they put up a character that people enjoy in front of the public, but return to being themselves when in private.

Any native Japanese speaker knows Bobby’s just doing the “boke” act on TV. In another show, Bobby’s son was doing the “tsukkomi”.

I would assume everyone is in on the act, co-talent, directors, make-up, wardrobe etc.

The other タレント were really getting into the feigned surprise.

It’s just like Professional Wrestling. Everyone knows it’s fake, but we like to pretend it’s real.

Yeah, any タレント or comedian has their own image or persona that they act out on TV, but their real-life personality is way different. I bet it’s pretty much the same with the other 「おバカ」タレント.

It’s a shock because it was exposed. Even if others do it, they haven’t been “outed” like this.

This isn’t the first time Bobby has been “outed”. It’s kind of becoming a running joke now. Otake and Mimura (of the owarai duo Summers) are well aware that Bobby can speak fluent Japanese. They are just acting surprised. That’s what お笑い芸人 do. Overreacting for comical effect. Everyone, the other タレント and the audience, knows that Bobby’s “mistakes” are intentional.
