Tokyo: Rio de Janeiro’s main rival for the 2016 Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee sent some people to inspect facilities in Rio de Janeiro recently, so a Japanese reporter went around town and asked residents what city they considered to be their biggest rival in the battle to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Tokyo beat Madrid and Chicago in the votes [possibly because the person asking the question was Japanese and the Brazilians were just being friendly and polite]. Residents said that they thought Tokyo’s modern facilities were its strong point.

Also included in the TV news report: An NTV reporter chasing after Nawal El Moutawakel, president of the IOC evaluation commission. I wonder if this reporter’s annoying behavior will effect her final decision about what city gets to host the games?

It might be that the Brazilians were just being polite towards the Japanese reporter, but as far as I know the Brazilians have high regards for the Japanese people. Maybe because there are many people of Japanese descent living in Brazil and interacting with the people. BTW, last year they celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of the first group of Japanese immigrants to Brazil, ( you can see some of it here…). I heard that even the Prince Naruhito went there. Actually, I’m very curious about Japan myself, that’s why I’m always checking japanprobe.com just to know what’s going on.

As a current resident of London and soon to be resident of Tokyo, I think the 2016 games should go to Rio.

Neither London nor Tokyo need to be ‘put on the map’ like Rio does. Sydney and Australia benefitted a lot from their games. The Olympics should go to places where the investment will make a real difference to facilities and their international profile.

As well, no-one on the Japanese side of my family wants the Olympics in Tokyo. They think it is an expensive nuisance.

I agree. Let someone else have their time to shine. Besides this is just Ishihara’s personal pipe dream. To be quite honest I hope it goes to Rio. If I am still here in 2016 I sure as hell will not want to be living with the Games going around me. Think its crowded on the trains now…

I think all for sites would make for a good place to hold them quarterly games!
The most interesting and brave thing, though, would be to hold them in Rio. A wounderful city with really nice and friendly people. Food is best in Tokyo but the overall experience would be best in RJ. Can just picture it: The Olympic flame being lit with the Corcovado in the background… Mmm!

Since the Japanese Olympic Commite chickened out and chose Tokyo (once again) over Fukuoka, I think it’s fair for them to get screwed by the IOC. Boa Sorte, Rio!
