Pierre speaks nippongo

May 8th, 2009 by James

“Pierre” the foreign man speaks Japanese with an utterly horrid accent to Mika Kano in this DHC commercial (are there actually Frenchmen in Japan who speak like this?):

Hahaha yeah, this CM makes me cringe every time it comes on. I thought I was hearing Ikko-san the first time I heard it…

Intentionally exaggerated? ‘Cause I’ve certainly seen heavily French-accented English used for comedic effect.

I did an audition once for a Japanese commercial and they asked me to speak with a stronger foreign accent. A foreigner speaking Japanese well isn’t funny enough.

I was going to send you that link! Also, there is a longer version of the CM where the second (or is that the third and the fourth?) of the plastic prostitutes is in an open-top car with another Frenchie.

Makes my ears wanna shut down.

Well, I guess it’s like that in order to be funny and to give a comedic effect, but I find it rather tragic instead, especially the fact that they even added subtitles to what he’s saying.

Also french, speaking Japanese (see my blog..). The gentleman does definitely has some instruction to speak with such an accent.
Even my parents who don’t understand a word of the language do speak with such strange intonations.

Well, anything goes I guess to get the message accross.
