A lot of dust was thrown about and some cameras and tents fell over, but nobody was injured.

Whirlwinds, dustdevils they are the same thing. They are very common here in the Southwest desert. Most people just close their eyes and shelter their faces from the dust.
Native Americans tell legends that say dustdevils are gateways to this earth for evil spirits. I just find them annoying~ always blowing dirt and dead brush into the swimming pool.

My father jumped into one of those once when he was a kid to see what would happen and it tossed him up and back pretty far.

When I was in my teens and early twenties and visited the US Southwest we used to jump into them and see how long we could manage to move with them while staying in the middle. Pretty difficult to do, actually. But a lot of fun! Just wear goggles and a mask or scarf to keep the sand out of your nose and mouth.

Glad I don’t live in the US where this is common. There is enough extreme things in Japan already with earth quakes and tsunamis. I noticed this old dude running away while leaving the kids behind.
