Dugong in Okinawa
A rare dugong was spotted swimming off the west coast of Okinawa yesterday:
It has been said that large numbers of dugong once roamed the waters around Okinawa, but there are now fewer than 50 left in the area.
Environmentalists (and peace activists), who blame the decline of the species on the U.S. military presence in Okinawa, have been fighting a plan to relocate a US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to a location near Henoko Bay, which they claim is a vital habitat for the dugong.
