SWINE FLU AT THE PETTING ZOO? Uhhhh….No.

TBS news visits a petting zoo in Toyama and asks parents if they are worried about the SWINE FLU:

Visitors are being asked to wash their hands and gargle their throats after petting the animals. As an employee points out, there is pretty much no danger of contracting swine flu from the pigs at the zoo. It seems they won’t be following Egypt’s example (for now).

This is actually a good idea, but not to prevent flu. There was a case here in the US a while back where a child died after visiting a petting zoo, they got fecal bacteria on their hands and it was transferred to their mouth. The child died of e. coli infection.
Remember, even cute little animals are kept in pens full of poop.

It is a good idea – which is why just most petting zoos in Japan have sinks and soap set up for kids to wash their hands. (Never heard about throat gargling until today, though.)
