Asashoryu granted permanent residency

Yokozuna Asashoryu is now a permanent resident:
Asashoryu, whose real name is Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj, has lived in Japan since 1997, when he became an exchange student at Meitoku Gijuku High School’s sumo club in Kochi Prefecture.
Foreign nationals must have lived in Japan for a duration of at least 10 years before they are eligible to apply for permanent residency.
According to sumo sources, Asashoryu was granted permanent residency on Monday after applying to have his visa status changed last September.

Yes, poor Noriko. All that stands between her and permanent residency status is a couple hundred kilograms, a talent in sports, and her gender.

Remove “gender” and insert “her parents violation of immigrantion law” would complete the CV.
