We’ve got an awful lot of strays in Osaka, as well, and it often makes me wonder whether there are any organizations in Japan that – if they have the time and resources – try to create awareness, or round up as many of the animals as possible to spay or neuter them. I’ve seen signs in Osaka Castle Park, for instance, that basically say, “Don’t dump your cat here.” There also seem to be feeding areas for people who want to bring food for the strays that live in the park.

The whole thing just makes me wonder if pet owners in Japan are at all encouraged to have their pets fixed…Especially before dumping them off at the nearest park.

I only wonder all the time why there are so many petshops selling cats for 200.000 yen and then so many stray cats on the streets who get killed after some time. Even those from the pet shops which don`t get sold. In my country it`s forbidden to sell cats and dogs in petshops. You can get them almost for free and no animals get killed.

There is no nationwide effort. There are some admirable Japanese NPOs and foreign-organized organizations as well. I have been trying to help the cats near where I live and work. See efforts at my blog.
